Jesse rushed in to the infirmary with a look of intense concentration, running up to the nurses desk he almost screamed "Where is Diana?!" They directed him to where she was and he began to run, a couple nurses in pursuit asking him to slow down.
When he finally arrived at the door he was grabbed by the nurses that forced a pair of scrubs on him, a hat and washed his hands. The whole time he was screaming that he was going to miss it, he was going to miss it.
Finally he pushed through the door and the doctors looked up at him as they were washing the excess off the child.
He'd missed it.
"Oh my god."

*Strands of sweat drenched hair clung to her forehead and cheeks as she lay there exhausted and barely conscious. she was crying silently... but not because of the labor pains.*

Jesse stared at the doctors as the child started crying, they walked over to Jesse and handed him the child. He looked down and whispered "A boy" slowly moving toward Diana he leaned over and touched her head "it's a boy baby, a boy."

*She opened her eyes for a moment, just long enough to look at her child and his father.*
"Matthew," *she managed to whisper.*

*More reluctant tears fell down her face as she closed her eyes."
"I'm tired..."
*She turned her face away and tried to sleep but she couldn't help but hate him but a little bit for putting her through everything alone.*

Jesse bit his lip and handed his son back to the doctors so they could take it to the nursery.
They moved Diana in to a cleaner room and Jesse sat out at the window staring in. They said she needed the sleep. How could he have missed the birth of his child, how could he have let her go through all of that without him.
He was with Christian.
But how was he suppose to know, how the hell was he suppose to know that she'd go in to birth that night? He didn't, it wasn't his fault, it wasn't...
But he could have been there.
I could have been there, I knew it was soon, I could have been there.

*Hours later, Diana awoke in a completely different room. She sat up and looked around: it was dark and cool and the room seemed foreign despite the fact that she had been in it countless time during her rotations. Being the patient always gave her a new perspective and reminded her of how much she hated being on the other side. Being a nurse meant that she could help; being the patient made her feel helpless... and reminded her of her mother.
Quietly, she pulled back the sheets and placed a hand on her abdomen. The swell was no longer there. She was a mother. She should have been overjoyed, glowing, surrounded my family and friends and her husband. But the room, instead, buzzed in silence.
Diana swallowed hard, holding back tears, and laid back down...*

Jesse had been pulling his hair out all night, snapping at any nurse who asked him if he needed anything. He'd apologize almost immediately, it reminded him way to much of his old self when he got upset. He didn't need to become that man again.
Gritting his teeth he peered through the window again, Diana had moved, he was sure of it, slowly opening up the door he poked his head inside.
"Baby...?"

*She closed her eyes but the tears gave her away. She laid there, hoping he'd go; figuring out what to say would be too hard.*

He walked over to her sleeping body, he hadn't noticed the tears, on the side of the bed he came upon, she was laying the other way.
He pulled up a stool and sat next to her, staring down at her body "I'm so sorry" he whispered "I shoulda been there, I should'nta went home, the baby room coulda waited, visitin Christian coulda waited. They said you was gonna be ready any day now, an-an I thought I'd be safe, ta go out and finish some things. But-I couldn't and now, now you probably don even wanna talk to me. I'mma right asshole I am."

*There was a long pause, after which she turned to face him. She said nothing. Instead, she slowly reached out and took his hand.*

Her movement scared him, so when she grabbed his hand, he flinched. He squeezed her hand and gulped "H-h-ow are you?"
