Strangely, it wasn't hard to be here once again. Though he would never forget the woman who'd meant so much to him, and given so much, he had finally been able to put her to rest. That, and there was Eponine. Such a twist of fate, that in the end they would end up together--though they'd certainly been friends and Eponine had definitely seen the things that had happened to him (and had her own rollercoaster of a life), he never had thought that it would become what it had. And yet, it made sense.
Though his being here did not. He wasn't sure what had drawn him back, but nonetheless, here he was. He stood, just inside the living room, flooded with memories of the past.

*A small hand, younger-looking than it should be, rested lightly on his shoulder.*
"Back?"

"I'm...not sure why I'm here." He said softly.
"But something tells me I should be."

"...a feeling that you did not move on when you should." He said suddenly.
Though he couldn't recall starting to say that, it felt right.

"It's hard to move on when you know you were supposed to go." *She said, her voice more tired than sad.*

He nodded, his expression solemn.
"You'd think Death would know that, and yet I've refused to move on, too."

*She took his hand and looked up at him.*
"Do you think we ever get to?"

He gave her hand a little squeeze, regarding her thoughtfully for a moment.
"I think we do...if we want to."
He paused.
"I...could take you with me."

*She had given it thought before. Nonetheless, the actual offer made her heart beat funny for a second or two.*
"I..."
*But whatever her sentence was going to be, it turned into*
"Yes."

"Really?"
He got over his momentary surprise, however, and kissed her lightly--a normal kiss, of course.
"We won't come back here, I should warn."

Gazing down at her, holding her hands in his, he realized that this was what he should have done ages ago, but hadn't because he'd too tied to this world. But at last, he had the moment, and he couldn't ask for a better companion.
"You're right. And my daughter will do well--I know she will."
Around them, the room seemed to darken, though not in a sinister way--there was something almost serene about the atmosphere now.
"When the room melts away, we walk." He said softly.

*Her lungs filled with air as she sucked in a breath, but her shoulders relaxed as she nodded. She subsequently put both hands on the sides of Tod's face and kissed him properly.*

It was a kiss to end all kisses, perhaps because it was the end. Whatever had gone before, whatever they'd been through, they could now have peace.
Sweeping her up in his arms, he walked into the darkness.
