"Yeeeeah, not really," she said with a sheepish grin.
"So... is it always empty in here like this or do you normally have employees?"

"Er, I used to get a fair amount of customers. I have employees--or, well, had. I've got no idea where they ended up in this whole time...continuum...vortex..."
He smiled to himself, thinking fondly of Chuck and Olive.
"I think they're back home. Or, at least, I hope they are."

Rachel's face brightened.
"The cops here are getting tired of the local croissant shop! I could probably get them to come here instead," she said excitedly.

As delighted as he was with the prospect of new faces, Ned couldn't help but feel a little distracted by the fact that these faces would be those of the authorities. There had been that vampire he'd touched--and accidentally killed--earlier in the week...but what was he saying?
He was no murderer.
"I'm innocent," he blurted. Realizing his mistake, he agitatedly shook his head and corrected himself. "I mean--I'm thrilled! Yes, I'm thrilled."

Ned's outburst was met with a strange reaction. All Rachel did was look at him for a moment with an expression that could best be described as amusement, observation and worry all rolled onto a frozen visage. And it stayed that way, frozen, for a few moments. But not too long for it to be uncomfortable. It was almost amusing, her reaction. Her grin quickly widened into a larger smile and she chuckled.
"You're a strange one, Ned," she said giving him a light punch on his arm. "I think I'm gonna have fun figuring you out."

"Yeah," he winced and agreed, clutching his arm. "Me, too.
"So, how did--how did you get into this business of yours?"

"Actually, my story isn't that different from yours."
Rach thought about that for a second.
"Actually... "
Then she thought about it some more.
"Who the hell am I kidding-- I accidentally shot a guy who was breaking into the apartment building I lived in a couple of months ago. Then he accidentally mentioned that he was on the run avoiding a court date so I figured he had a bounty on him so I turned him in. They gave me a fat wad of cash so I figured why not."
She frowned.
"Yeah, that's nothing like your story."

"Not really, no," he laughed awkwardly, shaking his head and shoving his hands into his pockets.
Pausing, he warily eyed her rifle, which lay on the seat beside her.
"Um, I take it you're a...well, sort of an expert with guns, then."

"Yeah, I guess... well, just misspent youth, more like."
She picked up her M-16 and placed it across her lap.
"This one was my first rifle. It was a wreck when I got first got it. Cleaned it up and made it like new."

"Oh--my first pie was an apple pie."
He frowned at how strange that had come out, and he inwardly cringed at his failed attempt to bridge the subject from first weapons to first...food...stuff.
"Well, of course, it's long gone now. The other boys must have gotten to it."

"But I bet you remember making that think like it was yesterday," she said with a smile. "Firsts always have a special place in a person's heart. Like today! Today was your first time almost getting killed. I'm sure you'll remember this forever!"
It took her a moment to realize that that wasn't exactly a desirable thing.
"Er... Well, I mean... Maybe you'll keep the back door locked?"

Ned stared at Rachel in a bewildered sort of way before recollecting himself and nodding uneasily at her last...well...uneasily phrased statement.
"Yes...I'll keep the backdoor locked...after all, how many bounty hunters could be one in place, right?"

Rach looked away, a distant look in her eyes.
"Hrm... good question. Should look into that..."

Well, that couldn't be good.
Ned gulped, wondering why he couldn't have traveled just a few decades--rather than a few centuries--back in time. He wouldn't have minded free-spirited hippies or political radicalists, as long as he could understand what was going on around him. Or so he thought.
Well, actually, he would have minded being caught up in a world war.
"At least there aren't any comic book villains running around and holding people hostage...right?"

Rach stopped for a second.
Actually...
"Mm-hmm," was all she said. Instead of saying more, she just stuck the fork that was on her plate back in her mouth. She didn't want to break his already breaking brain.
Although, if he asked...
