Andrews's was likewise, though not impatient; she was actually starting to feel comfortable already. Mr. Veidt reminded her of Celeste, and that was a good thing. It was...good to have somebody secure to be around.
In any case, she cleared her head and gathered herself again after Micaela left. "Quite a nice girl," she observed (and this worried her, as she wasn't sure if nice people didn't, after all, finish last). "...Sir, I think you will find me both polite and efficient--that is, after all, the motto I live by." Well, Celeste had, at least.

"Well, around here, I'm afraid we live by the motto of being prepared for the future- though yours isn't so bad either."
He laughed and shooke her hand, consummate professional to the core, and then took a seat behind his desk.
"I understand that there was some unpleasant business involving a Mr. Engarde some months ago-"

"And an excellent idea that has turned out to be, too," she noted with approval, mentally wincing at how her own preparations had turned out. She just couldn't seem to do anything right.
Either way, she shook his hand right back with courtesy, looked around a moment, and drew up a seat in front of the desk. It was...something of a surprise to hear he'd actually bothered looking it up, and she was briefly caught off-guard.
"W-well...yes...that is..." Deep breath. "Ahem. Yes, last year. An unpleasant business, very; I was his manager, but it turns out that he was just using me...fortunately, the killer was found out." She was not going to mention the rest of the case if she didn't have to, and she really hoped that he couldn't figure out where she was hiding things psychically as Mr. Wright could.

((Oh, he can. And he is. But he's not going to say anything.))
"His manager? A receptionist position must seem like a bit of a fall for you-"

((Wow. Pretty impressive. Even more disconcerting if he asks about the Kurain Village incident...))
"Yes, well. I've decided that perhaps my mistake was becoming that involved in the lives of clients. They tend to, ah, try and interpose their own agendas...quite frankly, and as cliche as it sounds, often sinister. I think I'd be just as suited for this position, and indeed, at least as happy."
((Foreshadowing? What foreshadowing?))

(("The microtwitches in his face may have been invisible to the layperson, but to me, he may as well have been sobbing."
Also, NO FORESHADOWING HERE, GEORGE.))
"Given your experience, if you do well, you will likely be put on track for promotion- I am a large believer in encouraging others to live up to their potential."
((NO NONE AT ALL.))

((Ah, yes. Almost forgot about that, and at first I thought he was bluffing...but that's unlike him.))
She actually smiled, if only slightly--this could work! Her life was getting back on track! Careful to keep cool, she fiddled with the planner in her hands, nodding. "Well, while I think one should do their job well no matter what, that's certainly an attractive incentive."

((I'm pretty sure when they replay that scene you can see some tiny twitches if you look closely enough.))
"Doing one's job is all well, and good, but initiative to consistently improve is better."

"Absolutely. Self-improvement through repetition and focus. That's the key, I'm sure."

"Not through repetition-"

"Ah! Of course. It's pointless to repeat something if you are mistaken about the essentials, I'm sure," she hurriedly put in.
Oh, this was why she hated job interviews. She was starting to get nervous now, and clenched her book a bit tighter. Somebody...tell me how I should handle this...please...

"Even greatness cannot move forward if it can't adapt."

"Yes, of course," she nodded, urging herself not to panic. "As with evolution. Even if something is supremely adapted to the environment, that becomes meaningless should the environment change."

"Now you're beginning to understand."
Across the room, Bubastis chuffed loudly in her sleep.

Her response was to nod and try to look both comprehending--in fact, she did get at least most of his philosophy just by listening to him already, or so she thought--and calm, professional.
Her glance passed to his pet for a moment, and she was a bit surprised to notice her. It wasn't terribly surprising, though, what with the courses she'd taken for credit on genetic engineering back in college.
