It seemed there was something in the chemicals Alan Campbell had procured for him.
Not what he'd been hoping for--the impurity he'd been hoping was the cause of his trouble had not recurred, but when he put a drop of Lucy's blood in the mixture, the reaction was clear. The white and red blood cells, shriveled and strange, had more or less regenerated. Had become "human." He couldn't be certain, he never could, but he thought he had it. Had something.
He'd thought that before.

Lucy had mostly kept busy, doing her best to keep Lucille at bay. John, when he emerged, did the same, neither of them wanting the personality that had made them into a vampire to come back. She didn't disturb Jekyll, and kept well away from the lab, not wanting to upset anything or get in the way. Besides, she didn't know what half the things on that lab table were called.
At present, she was sitting by the window, gazing out at the rain.

"Lucy?" Jekyll called. It was getting easier, just using her name, and he tried not to think about what that meant. Of course it meant something. Everything meant something. But he had too much to think about. His voice held an edge of suppressed excitement, under the gentle, almost unobtrusive query.
"Lucy, I... I may have found something."

"Ohhhh?" With her full attention on Jekyll now, she got up from her spot by the window and walked over.
"What'd you find?" She tried not to sound too excited, but it was evident in the tone of her voice and the shine in her eyes.

"I think," he said, oddly both rushed and hesitant at the same time, which was a queer quality of his, "that I've found a strain that actually repairs the damage done to blood. Er, it becomes viable blood again, rather then... food."
He looked at the mixture, frowning slightly.
"I cannot be certain," he said. "Like the others, it is... it is only a theory, and can be nothing else without further tests. Though I'm afraid that there are no more tests to be done that don't require a participant."

Her eyes widened a moment, and she glanced down at the lab table before back up at him.
"Ya mean...I could be...could be 'uman again?" She practically quivering with excitement.

Jekyll immediately felt remorse for getting her hopes up.
"I cannot promise anything," he said gently. "You of all people should be aware of that. And I cannot ask you to take this risk on yourself, not knowing what the results might be. There is a very real danger in any of my... inventions." He sighed. He could not fix the world. He could not even fix her. But he would try. "I have enough evidence to hope. But my hopes have, in the past, come to very little."

She nodded.
"Yeah, I know. But 'ow can ya test it? I got th' impression from spendin' time 'round other vamps that most of 'em like what they are and wouldn't wanna change."

"Of course," he said. "And with that in mind, I shouldn't wish to test this on an unwilling subject."
Hence his own experimentation on himself. He was glad of that, anyway; his failure had, at that time, affected himself alone.
And those Hyde had murdered.
"I'm afraid it is upon you to make this choice," he said softly. "If there was a way of finding a subject who wished to try it, I would do so. But I fear it may come to you choosing what you might risk. I do not say this lightly."

Lucy considered. She could go searching for someone that would be willing to have such a thing tested on them, but considering how hard it was to find a vampire that would accept it, it could be months or longer before she found such a one. She really didn't want to wait forever, a possibility thanks to her current state.
"I wanna try it. I'm tired of waitin'."

Jekyll looked into her eyes, as if searching for something he wasn't sure he'd recognize once he'd found it.
"If you're certain," he said softly. "Lucy I... I hope you know... I never meant to hurt you."

She wasn't sure what he was referring to exactly, but nonetheless took his hand in hers eyes, her eyes not wavering from his.
"Ye've done no such thing. Everything 'at's 'appened, I did knowin' I'd get in a lot of trouble. Would do it all again."

"Well," he said, smiling grimly as he poured the solution into a more easily-drinkable glass. "I should hope you've learned your lesson about drinking potions without direction." There was a note of chiding in his tone, which was unfair as it probably went without saying. He paused. "Will you be able to drink this?" he asked. "Without... blood."

"I promise, no more drinking mysterious potions." She said with a wink.
She eyed the concotion he'd poured out.
"I think it's fine th' way it is. I think I can drink not-blood stuff, once in a while."

Hopefully, Jekyll thought, she'd never need blood again.
"Hope" was something he had less and less of, these days. It was a good thing he was not a superstitious man. He handed the glass to Lucy, stepping back to give her space but watching with something between scholarly and more personal concern.
