Erik paused in his activities, laying the back of his hand along Julian's cheek.
"They will," he said, his voice rich with assurance. "Erik will stand for nothing else."
Just as quickly, he was back at work, maneuvering glass into place so that Julian could secure it.

*Julian's fingers had lost almost none of their dexterity and he slipped the sealant easily into the seams.*
"Do you think that he will still be angry?" *He asked at length.*

Erik was silent for a moment, considering this.
"I do not know," he said. "Mortimer... changes so often, and yet is so old. His mind is not like peoples', nor even like Erik's. Perhaps he will forget to be angry. Or perhaps he will forget he loves us."
Erik shrugged.
"I hope for the former."

"As do I." *Julian agreed.*
"It would be difficult now. Without him." *It would compound difficulties no doubt. Having been a friend for so much of Erik's life, it only seemed that it would be easier for him to have the familiar about him.*

Erik fit the final plate of glass into place, glancing at Julian.
"We will survive," he said. "We always have." He fell silent a moment. "Though I find I prefer something more than survival."

*That evoked a hint of a smile from Julian.*
"Yes, it certainly is better when one can indulge as one wishes."
*He seemed so far away then, the distance all the more apparent in the memory of what had been before.*
"I am eager to do so again."

The glass in place, Erik approached, laying a hand on Julian's arm. "I know things are... different," he said. The electric current he used to feel was gone, Julian's presence in his mind, the knowledge of their bond and Julian's regard. "But you need not deny all indulgence, Julian."

*Julian's lips tightened, though the touch was certainly welcome.*
"But if I could only finish what I must..." *He sighed in frustration at being forced to wait.*
"Then we could be...together." *His fingers traced gently over Erik's shoulder as Julian thought back fondly.*

"We will," Erik said gently. "And we are together now. Before you, Julian, Erik did not know the extent to which he could touch another person. Is it so bad, to be reduced to that which was even denied him, for so long?"

*Julian's lips tightened briefly. It was. So terrible, and yet...his mother's words stirred something in him that he could not deny. At least they had this. They had each other and touch was not denied. Slowly, he nodded, swallowing before admitting softly.*
"This must be enough." *He wanted so desperately to will it true. His eyes fell shut as he inhaled.*
"It will be." *He assured Erik.*

Erik laid a hand on Julian's shoulder, his other rising to stroke the man's cheek with the back of it. "For now," he reminded him. "Merely for now."

*There was comfort in the gesture, a simple safety offered by Erik's touch. Julian's eyes fell shut as he nuzzled his mother's hand and nodded.*
"Very well. For now." *His eyes opened and fell to the part of the tank they had be laboring on.*
"Please forgive my...lack of patience."

Erik's smile was somehow both self-deprecating and proud.
"You get that from your mother," he said.

*Julian gave a slight nod, coming to understand that even though they were separated now, they were still of the same. It eased his mind. Swallowing, he examined the tank.*
"What next, then?"
