*Julian was comforted that there would be no jumping into something without a more developed hypothesis and he pulled up a stool for himself and Erik.*
"That sounds agreeable." *He concurred, turning his attention to making sure he had the tools he would need.*

They got to work, the flow of it only slightly complicated by their lack of connection. There was not much they could do initially; once the artificial elements were set to developing, they needed time to mature. But Erik explained his theories, and in the back of his mind was trying to pick out that thread that eluded him, the thing that would make it all come together.
((I am being so very vague. Bad writing!))

((Oh don't worry, me too. I'm just not a super genius so I only kinda have an idea of what's going on.))
*Julian listened intently, but his child-like wonder had been replaced with a calculating efficiency. Some points seemed unclear and he brought them up, wondering if Erik expected him to understand inheriently or if it was something that he himself had yet to sort out the details of.*

((Wait... you're not?))
It was more the latter, and Erik seemed to feel out the concepts as he spoke them; after some experimentation some time ago, he'd abandoned the project. He'd been distracted by things... By Daaes and Julian and the press of the world's affairs encroaching on his own once more. And he'd had little reason to pursue this line of inquiry.
But as he spoke, and fiddled, he was increasingly of the opinion that it would be possible to create a being from some combination of machinery and biology that could house... something. Some one. Whatever essence these creatures of Julian's were. He'd done something similar before, even if he had not been entirely pleased with the results. And Erik never did anything twice without improving upon it.
He explained everything he could to Julian, and was quite clear on the points he had yet to figure out. When he wished to be, Erik was a patient teacher, and quite exacting in a way that encouraged his students by expecting great things from them.
"It will take time," he said at last. "But I do think it is possible."

((I have many secrets. I am shamed that you must know them.))
*Julian seemed much more at ease after they had managed some progress. He swiveled a mechanic joint he'd been assembling, happy with the result. His eyes found Erik's and a small smile hinted in the corner of his mouth.*
"How long does it normally take to grow?" *He asked, glancing to some cultures that had been set up.*

"We may experiment with the cultures," Erik said. "Perhaps we will gain some time that way. But it does take some little time; tomorrow we should see some progress, but an entire form, should we get to that point, will take long and meticulous work if it is to come out right."
He rubbed his hands together, as if dusting them off.
"There is not much more we can do at this time; there is some waiting involved."
It was a very sensitive procedure, but there was nothing to do once it was set up but see if the semi-organic materials took.

*Julian seemed reluctant to accept the limitations, if only because his own work had not had such road blocks. But then again, his hadn't been working either. He nodded.*
"Very well. Perhaps a chance of activity would be beneficial. I fear I have been...overly focused."
*Something that Erik could understand all too well.*

Erik laid a hand on Julian's arm.
"There is much we could do," he said. "There is music, and Mortimer's tank, and other projects to be finished. If you have the energy, and wish to help."

*Julian considered the options with a soft smile, then nodded.*
"I do. However I can be of most assistance."
*Though his mind lingered on the project at hand. He was ready to be done and to have things back to normal. Back to as they should be.*

Erik understood that last, even if he could no longer feel Julian's thoughts. He well understood impatience, but using organic materials it was impossible; like plants, these things took time. They could only be sped up so much.
"I should like to have Mortimer's tank finished by the time he comes back next," he said. There was a note of anxiety in his voice, a worry that if he did not, Mortimer's time away would become longer and longer.

*Talk of the sharkman drew Julian back to his senses.*
"Yes. Of course. All should be ready for him so he is welcome."
*It was no time to be estranging family, especially with things as they were.*

Erik, unaware of Julian's thought-process, nonetheless was happy that Julian was agreeable.
"Good," he said. "I find I am nearly done, but there is much that four hands will find faster work than two."
As he spoke, he led the way back out to the parlor, and the converted torture chamber/tank. A mirror still lined one wall, re-caulked and sealed pending the introduction of water. The rest had been sealed and a recirculating pump had been installed, as well as temperature regulation adapted from the heating elements that, at one time, had been meant to convince intruders to hang themselves.
Erik thought it an elegant solution.
All that was left to do, really, was install the facing wall of glass, and complete the door by which it could be entered and exited. Erik had decided that it was no longer feasible for the trap door to be accessible from the upper cellars; they had to re-route things so that now a ladder in the parlor led to an opening at the top of the tank.

*Julian took in the progress with a calculating eye.*
"There is not too much left to be done." *He observed idly, stepping forward.*
"Perhaps the walls should be installed first?" *He queried, glancing back to Erik.*

Erik nodded.
"You mirror my thoughts," he said. "With four hands, we should finish soon, and Mortimer will come home."

*Julian nodded in agreement.*
"And things will return to be as they should be." *He added, knowing that they only would be when his debt had been paid and his bond restored.*
