There was hardly even a rustle in the grass, or so San expected, having practiced such situations for years. If anyone did happen to notice her, all they would see would be a vague white shape as she peered out into the clearing.
This sort of thing had been happening to her ever since the humans had shown up, and she was almost as angry as ever. First the death of her mother, and now this, so she couldn't even get back to help the pack! Somehow or other, wherever she was, this had to be their fault.
Either way, she stealthily moved around towards the other side of the clearing, pulling her mask down over her face.

After returning to Lorien, Kiba slowly got back into a semblance of rationality, aided by Tsume's earlier pissed-off ranting. Running off to a far city at the first sign of a distant threat was not the smartest thing to do, especially when he was supposed to be protecting someone. Granted, he hadn't left Helen defenseless, but the weird stuff that turned everyone crazy for a while proved two things:
1) The humans here were already crazy if they thought pulling stunts like that wouldn't go as wrong as they had.
2) If he died, Helen would only have one pack member left. Tsume was perfectly capable of fulfilling the job, but his idea of protecting usually involved running away, which often left threats alive and at large even if they had no other choice.
Where did that guy go? He thought grouchily, sniffing the air a few times--and stopping. There was a human scent here; not Menelaus, but a rather young female somewhere in the field. The wolf was immediately on guard; if he'd taken this long to notice her, she was probably trying to stay quiet.
Why did they always come here? He wondered, tracking the girl's scent and stepping more quietly.

Interestingly, perhaps because of her human nature, San was almost as aggressive as Kiba; she had been known to make a solo attack on the well-armed leader of the enemies in the midst of their ranks. In their fortress. However, when on her own, she generally dsiplayed at least a modicum of caution. It angered her to think of the rest of her clan on her own now, and she paused, testing the wind.
Behind the mask, her eyes narrowed, and she growled slightly, stepping back farther into concealment and sniffing. Despite her nose being feeble compared to theirs, she would recognize the scent of a wolf any day. Was it friend or foe? and where?

Well, he was glad that the girl wasn't an Elf. They acted as strange as they smelled. Humans, no matter how skilled they were, had a predictable habit of getting prideful, which ironically made them easier to defeat (or kill, most of the time).
You can come out now, he called.

San didn't know that this was where the elves lived, though she would probably have believed in them if told sight unseen. After all, she interacted with spirits every day, and lived with them.
Seeing that she was found, she gripped the spear rather tighter at the message in her head and cautiously peered out. To her immense relief, she saw the wolf--a white wolf, perhaps a god like her family. Sighing, she stood fully and approached him, surprised that he couldn't speak vocally but grateful for any friendly face. "Who are you?" she called. "Did...did you get lost with the rest of the group?" She sniffed again. "I don't recognize you..."

It figured he'd run into a lost pup when he was trying to get back to Helen, Kiba thought resignedly. The other scents on her clothing were strange--they were from wolves, but there was also something untraceable in their scents that made him feel a mix of fear and awe.
Kiba did not like having to feel either emotion--only one denoted weakness, but both meant that someone else was stronger than him.
My name is Kiba, he replied, perplexed at her relief upon seeing him--if they didn't mistake him for a dog, humans normally ran away or got more nervous. Well, at least he wouldn't have to look like a human for this one. I don't know where the rest of your pack is, but they might be somewhere here.
