John smiled and reached over to touch Laszlo's shoulder "I'm not defending him, you understand, I saw what he did to you, and it was deplorable. I just can't help in seeing the good in things, it's just the way I am."

"Don't think I'll understand your viewpoint, but I know you're not defending him."
Though he had to wonder just how charitable of an opinion John could have when it came to some people. Like, what would he have to say about the man that beaten László up?

John didn't have to read his mind to know what Laszlo was thinking "Some people though" he tightened his grip and let go to lean back "are evil."

"Yeah, no kidding." He muttered.
"I could give you plenty of examples."

"I know you can."

Okay, the conversation was steering in a direction that he really didn't want to get into.
"So..."
How about the weather?
What've you been up to lately?
...
God, I suck at this.
"Do you...er...well...ah. I've been wondering..."

John crossed his legs and looked over at Laszlo and smiled "Yes?"

"What I do...doesn't it bother you?"
True, they hadn't talked a whole lot, but he was surprised that John hadn't really said anything about László's being a rentboy.

John looked down between his hands "I-" he laughed and looked up "Laszlo, I don't, I can't" he blushed "my religion tells me what you do is wrong. But I haven't listened to the Catholics since Marie was born." He turned his head away and looked out toward the window in the back of the room "Although I'm sure you could find, what people would call, honest work, this is what you do, and what could I say to get you stop?"

He rolled his eyes at the religion remark.
"No offense, but those people calling it wrong probably haven't been so hungry that they had to face deciding on either starving to death or doing out of desperation things you aren't proud of."
He sighed.
"Honest work? Don't know about that. Most 'honest' folk wouldn't offer me money...well, unless it's to get what what I currently offer.
Everyone thinks leaving it is easy, but it's not."

John laughed "You're right about that, although they did help me when I was so hun- nevermind, look I've seen, without exaggeration, a hundred rent boys" he swallowed "come through my shelter, each one different, but always the same. You- you happen to be the only one that's come here that's been different, and that's it. You aren't like the other ones, you understand that line of work your in. You get it."
John closed his eyes "What I'm trying to say, is there's always someone out there that will help if you ever did decide to get out of the trade. I will be there to help."

He was quiet for a moment, mostly from surprise.
"I'm...different?"
He glanced away for a moment before meeting John's eyes again.
"There's nothing to decide. I've always wanted out. Doesn't mean I can just leave.
But who'd take me? Seriously--the moment someone asks me what I used to do for a living, what the heck am I supposed to tell them?"

"You lie" John smiled "I know that's bad and all, but you lie, you make up something. Tell them you used to wash dishes at a shelter, or you worked the night shift as a security guard at the hospital, Isa would vouch for you."

He started laughing.
"You can't be serious...anybody taking one look at me would know I was lying about guarding anything..."
The laughter trailed away as he shook his head.
"If I lied about that, it would be like denying I ever went through that hell. I'm not going to make all of that for nothing."

John sighed "You know, I've got a friend, he owns this restaurant looks just like you, same avatar model and everything. He's a good guy, and he usually hires, no questions asked. I could put in a good word for you, if you'd like."
John knew that Laszlo would probably refuse, but he though he'd try anyway.
