"And Scaramouche seemed to understand modern technology despite future she claimed to be from? Understand it well. You say she was possibly mentally ill. Seems strange," said Rorschach, vaguely.

"I suppose very little had changed in this imaginary future, considering she seemed rather obsessed with Queen- the musicians, I mean," Adrian retorted dryly. "Is this really your only reason for coming here?"

Only the inkblots on Rorschach's mask changed overtly, but the stiffening of his posture, the straightening of the spine, gave off a very strong feeling of chilliness. "Girl murdered," said Rorschach. "Girl you knew personally by men you hate. Would have thought you a better man, Veidt."

"I agree that the girl's death was deeply unfortunate, but I'm afraid that the degree of interaction I had with her was somewhat less than you surmised." Adrian said coolly, straightening up more fully to stand over Rorschach.

"She didn't know anyone," said Rorschach, breathing heavy, though that might have just been the mask. "Knew you as well as anybody. Trying to find out why she had to die. Thought you might be a good place to start. Thought wrong, apparently."

Rorschach paused in leaving, looking over his shoulder at him, something in his posture relenting.
"Only so few of us left," he said, after a moment, and whether he meant superheroes as in the two of them-us or just himself, excluding Veidt. But there was no sting in his voice, as there could easily be. It might have been an apology; that, however, wasn't that likely either. He wasn't uncomfortable enough, merely appearing to give it slight thought.

"Rorschach," said Veidt, as he came a little closer, with what sounded oddly like sympathy in his voice, "how long do you really think you can keep this up?"

Rorschach took a step backwards, as though trying to maintain power through not relinquishing... eye contact, or whatever he had, through that emphasis Veidt could so easily place on his comparative height.
"Will it matter? World in condition bad enough as it is, with or without - without me."
His voice, which started out pragmatic, turned ragged, moreso than usual, on the last words.

"You're the only one really left clinging to this fantasy- a fantasy which you mustn't convince yourself I blame you for, as I used to share it myself- this idea that one can simply put on a mask and solve all the world's problems by dealing with petty criminals."
He lifted a hand, as though about to settle it on the smaller figure's shoulder, but then slowly pulled it back with faint reluctance.
"You have dug your own grave so deeply that I confess I worry for you at times."

Rorschach might have flinched; his shoulder jerked back, at any rate. It was good when Veidt did not lower his hand.
"Fantasy, Veidt? You sell fantasy world to thousands of deluded. Not criminals. Civilians. But doing their part in digging the grave. Letting the worst happen. Brink of world war three. People want toys for children and collars for dogs - same things people always want.
"Not deluded," Rorschach continued, with another step backward, although he did not appear to have any goal in mind. "Can't solve world's problems. Can't do anything. But have to do something."
It would be an understatement to say that Rorschach's breathing seemed to become narrower and more labored as he went on.

"I do what I can with the money I earn," Adrian said stiffly, eyes narrowing very slightly. "Worldwide initiatives, programs to eliminate crime to begin with..."

"Coddling them," countered Rorschach, with hoarse venom. "Taking care of the top layer. Making sure that when the water level rises, there's infrastructure for top crust to cling to. The meek are dead. Won't matter. Won't be much of a world to inherit."
This seemed to have taken a lot out of him.

Rorschach was expressionless beneath his face.
"Sorry to waste time," he said, in a tone that, had it not been and sounded exactly like Rorschach, would not have been out of place for a comment about the weather. "Hope you didn't mind."
There was a grunt of farewell as Rorschach climbed down again and disappeared.
