The next evening, Nadir had Edward summoned to his office as he sat at his desk, going over paperwork by lamplight.

Edward was not wearing his new t-shirt. But he did appear before Nadir, his skin almost human-looking in the soft lamplight though his movements were too smooth and effortless.
He supposed he was going to be fired, now; workers, of course, had no rights, and Nadir hated him. So it was only natural. It frustrated him that no matter what he did, he just couldn't seem to learn Farsi. If vampires had special gifts, perhaps they had special deficits, too, and the one thing in the world he couldn't do was understand Farsi.
But Nadir's skin was golden-brown in that light, and his pulse beat delicately beneath the thin skin of his neck. Edward kept his eyes carefully averted, though the smell...

"Sit," said Nadir, his eyes flickering towards the chair opposite his desk. "You owe me some answers."

Edward's topaz eyes flickered as well, between the chair and Nadir, and while he sat his manner seemed distance and haughty.
"I don't think I owe you anything," he said softly, as if acknowledging that he'd saved Nadir's life without putting it into words.

"I rely on transparency from those in my employ. You have been less than forthcoming, Edward," said Nadir. "I am entitled to know what may concern my establishment."

Edward blinked slowly at him. Of course, in his own perception of time, it was much, much faster. This was part of the reason Edward seemed so bored with everything. Everything took so long.
"I'm very pale," he said, deliberately misunderstanding Nadir. "I'm not sure I can do transparent."
Nadir was free to take that as some sort of metaphor, of course.

Nadir got to his feet, anger surging beneath his skin. The idiot boy thought to toy with him, did he?
"You're an aggravating brat is what you are. Unless you are prepared to answer my questions truthfully, with none of these games, you can seek employment elsewhere. I've no interest in keeping mimsy, smart-mouthed boys on my payroll."

Being called a "brat" by this utter child amused him, even as it tore his heart to shreds that Nadir hated him so. Well, he should.
Edward leaned forward suddenly, his hands on the desk, his body arcing fluidly towards Nadir though he stopped short a few feet away.
"Maybe you shouldn't," he said softly, his dulcet voice even more alluring for all the danger it held, like a gleaming knife-edge. "Maybe you shouldn't have anything to do with me. Maybe I'm not mimsy at all. But whatever else I am, I'm no threat to your 'establishment.'"

"Very well, then. You're fired," said Nadir, meeting that golden gaze which mirrored his own so perfectly. "I haven't the time to waste on those who taunt me."
For the briefest moment, his eyes dropped to focus on Edward's pink kissable lips.

Edward did not have to read Nadir's mind to know what was on it in that moment. Or hear Nadir's accelerated heartbeat.
He had to get out of here. He was going to drown in those golden pools.
"Good," he said, his breath coming a little faster. "Do you think I want to... wash your dishes?"

"You came here wanting something," Nadir pointed out. "I don't need your tricks. My life is complicated enough as it is."

Edward laughed darkly.
"You don't know complicated," he said. "I came here looking for money; but I can earn it elsewhere."
The scent was so heady, so intoxicating... He'd have stopped breathing, even if it looked wrong, only he needed to talk. He stood back from the desk, his eyes boring into Nadir's.
"Be careful," he said, but the words seemed rough, somehow.

Nadir chuckled softly.
"Am I supposed to be afraid?"
He drew back, picking up a sheaf of papers to peruse, as if the boy bored him immensely.
"Go home, Edward."

"You would if you knew what was good for you," Edward said. He was a monster. Nadir Khan did not know what he was messing with. Or, in this case, dismissing.
He could wash dishes faster than any callow boy.
Edward raised hollow, amber eyes to Nadir's. "I have no home," he said flatly, and turned away.

It was rather like a fist to the gut--that look Edward gave him sent shivering spikes of lust through every muscle in his body. Taking the barest of moments to collect himself and catch his breath, Nadir waved Edward away.
"As you've so succinctly put it, I would do well to not interfere with your personal business. I do not fear you, and moreover, I never will. Be gone, to wherever you will."
