*Brishen walked the horse calmly through the streets of Paris until he found the address. It would have been easier with Grantaire, but if he had other...issues... He couldn't dwell on it. He had to move forward. The girl slung over the horse, he loosened her and carried her to the door, giving it a firm knocking.*

*The door seemed to unlatch and swing open of its own accord, revealing the shop full of its ticking, twitching mechanisms and the man who sat silently at the beck of the workshop, twisting a minute screw into place.*

*Brishen leaned back on instinct, surprised by the manner of...well, everything inside. Suddenly less eager to go in, he stood in the doorway, the girl still in his arms.*
"Sir." *He called to the man in a rich voice.* "Pardon me. I am looking for Herr Drosselmeyer."

*The man stood, staring out from the relative darkness.*
"I am Herr Drosselmeyer," *he said after a lengthy pause, speaking as though passing a pronouncement, a judgement, as if Brishen had passed some kind of unspoken test in the seconds that the clockmaker had merely stared at him, each moment marked by the cacophony of the clocks.*

*Brishen seemed somewhat relieved and yet uneasy to enter. The room represented everything he wasn't, lacking all the natural lines and comforting smells of life on the open road. And that sound. It was smothering. He lifted the girl in his arms slightly.*
"I found this. This woman. I think she's yours."

"Oh!" *Drosselmeyer's tone lightened somewhat with his own surprise--and he was rarely surprised.* "I hadn't thought I'd ever see her again," *he admitted.* "She wandered off before I'd finished repairing her and I'd quite given up on her being likely to return. If you want to just dump her on that table, there," *he said, pointing.*

"Uh...sure. Of course." *Brishen hesitantly stepped over the threshold, looking about subtly as he made his way to the table and carefully set the girl onto it.*
"Um, sir...I was curious. Do you...make these sorts of people all the time?" *That was a blunt way of putting it.*

"More or less, it has been something of an occupation for some years. Well, more of a hobby, perhaps. There's no demand for them from the public--for them I only make clocks and toys of a smaller nature. The life-sized models are for my own curiosity."

*Brishen stayed poised cautiously next to the table as he continued.*
"Do you know of others...that make people like you? Share the interest?"
*The subject obviously made him a little uncomfortable. Hell, the whole place did.*

"I know of no one...no one like me."

"Hmm..." *Brishen's brow lowered, vexed by the answer.*
"But...if there was someone else...'s work, you might be able to give it a look over and...I don't know, fix it or improve it, no?"

"...certainly, all clocks are the same, after a fashion," *said Drosselmeyer.*

*Brishen's expression did not lighten.*
"What if he--it--its insides run on water? Could you...make it easier for him?"
*Worry edged into his features. This certainly would have been easier with Grantaire here. He frowned.*

"A water clock? It's been some years since I have seen such a device--I do not prefer them, myself, but I could certainly have a look."

*Brishen seemed to be following some private thought. He was promptly pulled from it.*
"Uh, thank you. I'd be very appreciative. Do I...we...need to make an appointment. You must be busy..."
*He was sorting, planning and trying to figure how to make things easier on his friend.*
