Esmeralda nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, yes. Would you?"

"Absolutely," she said, giving her hand a squeeze.
"I'll do so after dinner. The guards get a bit lazy around that time."

"Good. Thank you."
Impulsively, Esmeralda gave Anastasia a hug, Djali bleating softly between them.

She hugged Esmeralda back, suddenly reminded of her long-gone sisters. No, she didn't have them anymore, they were beyond her help--but Esmeralda wasn't, and she would do what she could to get her out of here.

Esmeralda settled down for the night, Djali beside her, and tried to think about her day. It made no sense. She could only hope it would make more tomorrow, and that they'd get out soon. Still, she thought... She wouldn't mind talking to the king again...

After dinner, with the guards proving her right, Anastasia had gone off into a secluded little area of the harem to quickly write the little note she'd planned on. There wasn't a lot of space on the paper she'd gotten hold of, and she had to make the best of it.
Please send help. Trapped at the harem. Kidnapped from our homes.
She wanted to put more explanation, but it wasn't possible. She quickly folded it up and hid it in a fold of her outfit. Tomorrow was the day when the note would be sent off.

Esmeralda, for her part, sleep decently that night, for she had learned to snatch sleep where she could. She would miss Djali when he was on his mission, so she held him tight, despite his wriggles.
When morning came, she woke with the dawn, and walked with him a little in the open courtyard.

Anastasia, having stayed up too late, was a bit slower to wake up. When she finally did, though, she took the note with her, keeping it on her person for fear of it being discovered if left in the harem. She wasn't sure when Djali should be sent with it--the goat was unique enough that he might be missed too quickly if he disappeared during the day.
She wandered outside.

Esmeralda ran up to her friend when she saw her.
"Good morning," she said. Djali trotted up beside her.

"Morning!" She said, stifling a yawn.
"It's done. All we need is the right time." She said, quieter.

Esmeralda smiled.
"May I see it?" she asked shyly, glancing about. She didn't want to be found, of course, but she was so curious. "When do you think we can send him?"

First making sure nobody would see, Anastasia pulled out the note and handed it to Esmeralda.
"Maybe at night. It would take a lot longer for someone to notice that Djali is gone."

Esmeralda nodded, but she was staring at the small piece of paper now. She thought she recognized some letters, but she couldn't read it.
"It looks good," she said with false bravado. "I think Djali will do fine, with this."

"Thanks. I know he'll do well. He's the smartest goat I've ever seen."
And she had met goats, on the road to France from Russia. She wasn't just saying that.

Esmeralda beamed.
"Do you hear that, Djali?" she chirped, handing the note back to Anastasia. "You'll make me proud, I'm sure."
She looked around, her expression falling a little.
"Now... I suppose we wait."
