Those who had been left behind by the Oriental pirates lived here, now, awaiting their ultimate fate. Anastasia was determined to keep a brave face, no matter how bleak any of the others might think the situation was. Rather than brood on her circumstances and how doomed she was, she spent the days trying to think of a way to ward off the inevitable. Surely, there had to be a way for them to all make it out of here.
((I'm very, very tempted to have Anastasia pull some kind of Scheherazade-type thing with Xerxes))

Esmeralda had responded by retreating, mostly, into her own world. She pet her goat, and sang the songs of her people in an undertone. She was too afraid to dance.

Anastasia glanced sadly at Esmeralda. She knew of the Romany, as they'd certainly traveled through Russia during their endless wanderings, and it seemed like some kind of blasphemy to hold one in what ammounted to a prison. A prison of silk and perfumes, but it still was one.

Even if she was quiet, wilting in the confines of their prison, Esmeralda was not quite broken. Finally she spoke, noticing Anastasia's gaze.
"Where are you from?"

"Russia." She softly replied.
Her homeland seemed so far away right now that it may as well have been on the moon....she was just as likely to see either, all in all.

"Is that across the ocean?" Esmeralda asked, having no concept of geography. "From France, I mean."

She smiled at Esmeralda.
"It's to the east of France...far to the east."

"Oh," she said, her eyes dropping in shame. "I'm sorry. I'm afraid I'm rather ignorant of such things." She didn't know where they were now; they could be anywhere, as far as she knew. "Why is it taking so long?" she whispered, not caring if Anastasia heard her. "What are they going to do with us?"

"It's all right. I don't think it'd be safe to go back there, anymore."
She sighed, glancing around the immediate area.
"I don't know. It's almost as though it's being dragged out, to see how we react."

"How are we supposed to react?" Esmeralda demanded. "I'd rather die!" she continued, passionately.

"So would I! There must be a way for us to escape! This place can't be completely sealed off from the world."

Esmeralda wasn't so sure. She supposed this sort of thing happened all the time--to those with no one to come after them.
"Don't you have anyone looking for you?" she asked, perhaps impolitely.

Her enthusiasm melted away somewhat, her mind briefly turning toward the days she'd spent in Lorien (almost a dream rather than a memory, that) before she slowly shook her head.
"No one."
Those who would are dead or missing.

Esmeralda nodded, for she was in the same situation.
"All the family I have is Djali here," she said mournfully. "But..." She bit her lip. "What if he can help us?" The thought hadn't occurred to her, but what if Djali could get help?

Anastasia hadn't considered that before.
"You know...that could work. They seem to have forgotten about him, or they just ignore him. If they don't really pay that much attention to a goat..."
She glanced at said goat, who seemed to have weathered the whole situation rather well.
