"We've been fortunate," *said Anne.* "I mean...after...after Matthew died...well, things could have been so much worse."
"Anne gave up a scholarship to go to college to stay and help me run the place. I'd've had to sell Green Gables if it hadn't been for her," *said Marilla proudly.* "And finished her degree by correspondance, in any case."
"Marilla..." *muttered Anne in vague protest, her face turning red.*

Darcy was aware of the sacrifices Anne had made for Marilla and Green Gables, and found them a highly flattering illustration of her character. "Miss Shirley is a most accomplished young woman. And I am not known for bestowing that opinion lightly." But he was aware, of course, of the young lady's embarrassment. "My sister Georgiana will be happy for your help, Miss Shirley. She has impeccable taste, of course, but tastes vary so widely from location to location, I'm afraid she's panicked herself into inaction."

*Anne smiled gratefully at him for the change of subject.*
"That's understandable. New places and people can be hard to know. Avonlea enjoys the simpler things, I think. Something floral might do well..."

Darcy nodded. "Roses?" he suggested. "It appears to be the season. But I will defer to you. Perhaps we should convene there, for any final plans."
((Should we be highlighting the difference between him and Willoughby?))

***ANNE***
((Could do, perhaps.))
*Anne nodded.* "That sounds like a fine plan. What time should I come to White Sands?"

"I will be there all day, I think," he said. "But does 2 suit you?"
He really did need her; he did want the thing to come off well, and he did not trust himself. But he wondered if he ought to feel dishonest due to the great personal pleasure he knew it would give him to have her working at his side.

"Two o'clock would be fine," *said Anne.* "I'll make notes and bring some ideas."

Darcy could not hide his glad smile, though it did not surface long.
"Thank you," he said genuinely. "I will owe any success in the thing to your influence, I'm certain."
((We can keep talking, or skip ahead...))

((I like skipping.))
"Come now, Mr. Darcy be fair. I think you underestimate your own talents."

This smile only touched his eyes, and one would have had to know him to see it. "Perhaps," he said. "But I like to be prepared, as well. Now if you'll forgive me, there is still much to do and I fear I must leave you sooner than I might wish."

***POSTING AS ANNE***
"Then I'll see you at two o'clock," *said Anne, standing to show Mr. Darcy to the door.*

Darcy smiled warmly, if without great showiness, and took his leave.
The next day he awaited Anne eagerly, without looking eager or like he was waiting for anyone. He was arranging flowers, actually, though inside he felt somewhat anxious.

*Anne showed up only a little late, wearing a plain blue dress, an apron rolled up under one arm.*
"Good morning, Mr. Darcy," *she said, strolling up behind him as he fiddled with some flowers.*

Darcy turned and smiled, a rose sitting unconsciously in his hand. "Good afternoon, Miss Shirley," he murmured. "Thank you for coming; I am attempting to determine if roses are, in fact, the most suitable flower." Though this was incongruous dialogue coming from Mr. Darcy, he acted as if it was quite natural. Not because he was fully comfortable talking about flowers, but because such talk was essential in this situation, and his pride would not allow him to show any such discomfort. "I trust your journey was uneventful?"

"As placid as a walk through Avonlea can be, Mr. Darcy. Now--what are your thoughts on the roses, in particular? Have you any doubts?"
