*Chuck sat there, deep in thought, ignoring the driver. It was a while before he spoke.*
"At least it wasn't your fault."

*She paused for just a moment.*
"I can blame a thousand things. I can blame myself, I can blame the urchin that ran out in front of our carriage, scaring the team, I can blame Nicki for wanting to go to the park that day. But the fact of the matter is that it happened. No matter how I think about it... the only thing I can do now is try to keep what's left of my family together, and try not to make her mistakes."

"In retrospect... I'd take crappy family over no family in a heartbeat. You're smart to realize it right now when you've still got someone."

"Come in for coffee or something." *She said suddenly.* "And maybe fudge. Our cook makes excellent fudge and I could smell her making a batch when we left."

*He looked out the window at her house then back at her. With a simply nod, he accepted.*
*After stepping out of the carriage, Chuck held the door open for Adrienne then handed the driver a few extra notes on top of what he already paid him.*

*Her shoes were off again (they pinched) and with one hand, she was holding her skirts up as she moved toward the back stairwell which would lead to the kitchen.*

*There was the sound of the door closing but if Adrienne were to turn, she wouldn't have found him.
With his tuxedo jacked draped over his shoulder, Chuck walked next door to his house. He stepped over a low hedge and onto his lawn.
He looked over his shoulder at her house for a moment. As much as he wanted, he just couldn't. Chuck found it much easier to be known as the town rake than just sit down and talk to a person. Even drunk, he realized how emotionally stunted he was.
Fighting to keep a secure footing on the ground, he trudged back home.*
