"Papa... he seems admirable, he really does. And in many respects, he is. Very brave, very passionate. But... he's always been a little too devoted to his Cause. He's affectionate, yes, but his deepest feelings are reserved for Mother France."
*She paused.* "I think from the beginning, though, what I resolved actively to do was be as little like my mother as possible."

*His eyes snapped up to hers.*
"Why not?"

"Well for starters she was a whore." *She said plainly.*

*His brow furrowed but shrugged as he realized what she must have been saying.*
"Well, no one's perfect."

"No, quite literally, she was a prostitute living at the Moulin Rouge. She was pregnant when my father met her, she lost the baby, they shacked up and only got married when she found out she was pregnant with Nicki." *There was a slight tinge of bitterness in her family.* "Half of my pedigree says I should be farming goats in the bloody mountains."

*Chuck took a few moments to process everything she said. Still, with all the crazy things that she said, he could only come to one conclusion.*
"Regardless, you're lucky to even remember your mother," *he said, his eyes averted to the floor. He absentmindedly fiddled with the velvet on the interior of the carriage.*

"I'd rather not, to be quite honest. All she did was pretend to love us and then leave."

"No parent pretends to love," *he said, despite himself. It wasn't until he said the words out loud that he realized that he was preaching to the choir.*
"Then again," *he sighed.* "What the hell would I know? I killed my mother."

*She frowned.*
"And how exactly did you do that, if you don't remember her?"

"I never said that I didn't remember her," *he said flatly.*

"You implied as much."

*Chuck grinned mirthlessly.*
"She died giving birth to me," *he said, sounding strangely plain.* "My old man never really forgave me for it."
*The second part sounded even plainer. It was obvious, though, that his tone was because he was hurt and not because he felt indifferent.*

"At least you know she loved you. That she spent nine months carrying you around and worrying about you and wondering what you'd be like. My memories of Bella are either in a hospital bed, or a woman who didn't even know my name. Who didn't remember me at all."

"I'd give anything just to have her look at me. I wouldn't even ask her to remember or do anything except just that."

"I spent fifteen years waiting for her to wake up, Chuck. Fifteen years, and she finally did, and she didn't know me."
*She took a moment.*
"Trust me. You'd want her to know who you were."
*They'd pulled up to the townhouse.*
"We've arrived!" *The coachman called.*
