*William's brow offered the slightest arch, the man giving that one last tug of intrigue before disappearing. He shook his head, delightfully bemused and continued on his way.*

**ANOTHER DAY**
Jammes tripped lightly down the stairs. She took the Grand Escalier as often as possible, because it made her feel, well, grand, and she imagined it showed her off to excellent effect. If anyone happened to be watching. It wasn't exactly encouraged, of course; ballet girls ought to be discrete, and leave by the back entrance. But Jammes was wearing a lavender day dress and her hair was freshly curled and she saw no reason to keep that to herself.

Eddie Blake was bored in Paris. He wouldn't, normally, have considered that possible; last time he was here, the city had been packed with exciting things to do. Maybe he'd just become jaded, or maybe it was the nature of this itself--this completely screwed-up version of Paris--but the fact remained.
He himself was still wearing his combat uniform; ladies, he'd found, in complete compliance with the stereotype, couldn't resist a man in uniform. Sighing to himself, he glanced around the foyer some more, considering the art if not exactly appreciating, when his eyes caught a rather more captivating feminine figure than the statues. Casually, he sauntered up to the stairs, waiting for her at the bottom and even taking his cigar out of his mouth.
"Evening, honey. Performance go well?"

His uniform certainly was odd, and not at all recognizable to Jammes as such, for she did so like the handsome cut of a naval officer's dress! But his interest was not without its flattering points, and Cécile curtsied with rather more care than she usually graced her plies with.
"Why, weren't you there, monsieur?" she answered pertly. "Surely you should tell me."

You couldn't impress 'em all at first glance. Eddie did notice, though, her rather more interested curtsy than he'd been getting recently, and smiled, going so far as to give a slight bow in return.
"'Fraid I just got here; it's a shame. I'd have loved to watch. Bet you knocked 'em dead."

Jammes blushed, not at all immune to flattery. In fact, she fair thrived on it. "I'm hardly the star," she protested, but looked up at him through lowered lashes. "You'll just have to come again."

Most women did, Blake thought; for that matter, even most men.
"No?" He raised an eyebrow, as though disapproving of that. "Well, that is a pity. You wouldn't want to at least discuss it over drinks? My treat..."

Her eyebrows raised in modest surprise.
"Oh, me?" she breathed. "Well I... Maman..."
But maman was dead, and what was the harm in a drink? In public, with people around...
"Oh, well, I... certainly," she said, smiling demurely.

Blake chuckled pleasantly, raising an eyebrow himself behind the domino mask. She still worried what her mother thought? That was kind of cute, in a childish sort of way. Still, there was no denying that she was, after all, a catch.
"That's fantastic. You know any places around here?" he went on to ask, not thinking that the previous watering hole he'd been at was suitable for women.

"Of course," Cécile said. "That is, I've heard of a place... people go." Of course she'd been there, they all had, but it wasn't exactly delicate (at her tender age) to admit it. She smiled, her cheeks dimpling. "It's very close."
And full of people, she thought.
"Why do you wear a mask?" she asked innocently. She could see him well enough with it on, but it was odd. "The ball's not for ages."

"I'll bet you have," he replied with a chuckle. Just like a woman to be coy about admitting it. In any case, he smiled. It wasn't like him to care about whether a place was busy or not for deterrance...
"Hm? Oh, yeah. Well, honey, you see, it's part of the outfit. I'm workin' with the military as a sort of special operative, and I need to keep my identity secret."

Predictably, her eyes widened, and she put one tiny hand on his arm.
"Oh, but isn't that terribly dangerous?" she breathed, fascinated. Jammes was not a terribly complicated woman.

((Hey, I'm back!))
Eddie adopted his most heroic pose, with a grin.
"Oh, you better believe it is," he replied. "I've fought bank robbers, supervillains with death rays, and everyone in between, but they couldn't hurt me."

Well he didn't sound like nobility, and he didn't dress like money, but he was fascinating enough despite his roughness and Cécile's bright eyes danced like gas flames. Only not as disturbing as that sounds.
"How fascinating," she breathed, not playing along at all, as they descending for the exit. "You'll have to tell me all about your adventures. The not-so-secret parts, anyway."

((Baaack!))
Old money? Blue blood? That wasn't Eddie, and he didn't exactly have the delicate social touch required to succeed in fancy social circles, but he did fashion himself a good soldier. That at least had to count for something. Seeing that his touch was as good as ever, Blake smiled even wider.
"Oh, I'd be glad to," he chuckled as warmly as he could, making a mental note to leave out the more gruesome parts. "Nothing like a story over drinks, eh?"
