((Thank you! That was an interesting read.))
*William's grip only tightened slightly at the name, his eyes narrowing as if trying to remember something.*
"You...are a singer, are you not? I have not had the privilege, but I do believe that your reputation precedes you."

((I think castrati are awesome. <3))
Farinelli kept on gently smiling, only the slightest flush to the cheeks revealing that any fame at all quite enormously pleased him. Farinelli was not too easily flattered, per se, but the hint of praise was modestly received with the same enormous pleasure.
"I have come just recently from England, and was in Italy before that," as his Italian stage name and accent would reveal. It was a rather long sentence for Farinelli, but graciously spoken, each syllable meant to affirm Aubrey's question and to thank him for his indirect praise.

((Nice article. But I shouldn't have liked to have been the majority who did not become rock stars; it's like foot binding or something, where most of the girls did *not* marry rich and were forced to do physical labor on deformed feet.))

"Oh really?" *William seemed more intrigued.*
"Perhaps I will be able to rectify here what I was not able in England then." *His brow lifted genially.* "Are you going to be in the upcoming performance?"
*The soft foreigner was ever so interesting. He should like to hear the man sing.*

((Kris: Oh, fine, thanks, rain on my parade!
Actually, I thought the same thing. <.< It's very disturbing, really.))
Farinelli's smile only widened, or perhaps that was not the right word; merely, the sentiment behind it deepened in his eyes, which glanced away a matter of seconds before returning, holding Aubrey's gaze unflinchingly.
"I hope you deem it worth speaking of," he said by way of affirmative. "You've such an eloquent pen."

*It was William's turn for his smile to widen.*
"Then you are familiar with the Gazette?" *He beamed.*
"I look forward to the performance. I know the company has taken great pride in the singers in their employ."

Farinelli was very pleased to hear this, particularly considering how well it spoke of him that this Paris Opera House had hired him. And considering that France had been quite against castrati in their theaters until this point - rather silly, all things considered, so Farinelli thought - he had been a bit concerned. He had been such a smashing success in England and leaving it to go elsewhere was daunting.
"I hope to become more familiar," said Farinelli, voice unobtrusive, eyes intent, as though, although naturally he did not, he meant several layers of meaning in the word, "as I hope to remain in the country longer."

"Indeed?" *William queried, finding this man ever more delightfully peculiar.*
"How long do you think you'll be here? Barring the unforeseeable, of course." *He said with a grin. It seemed odd that a man that had obviously traveled so much would look to settle, though Paris was certainly a pleasant enough prospect for such things.*

Farinelli's hand unconsciously fell to his throat, massaging it over the silk and lace scarf he wore, typical of the period. It appeared rather introverted and unassuming, as though it had been tied too tightly and he were in discomfort, or that, perhaps, his throat was sore, providing the unusually soft voice.
"Certainly a year or two," said Farinelli. "I do not mean to be a... a tourist."

"Well well..." *William purred, his smile deepening as his gaze lingered a moment too long on the man's hand at his throat.*
"Of course one wouldn't want that. Though I admit, it seems a big commitment for a man like yourself. Paris, and perhaps the Opera herself, must have made quite an impression."

Farinelli felt quite innocent of any knowledge of this other man, but, nonetheless, as everyone in the entertainment industry was for sale in some way or other, he responded to his actions in a natural and seamless way, although not a deliberately coquettish one.
A man like himself... Aubrey really had no idea how words like that might affect Farinelli. He was already enormously charmed. He still grasped his hat in one hand, having not yet replaced it, and bareheaded, he felt even more vulnerable in his own way, as well as much more polite than he would have felt otherwise. "It is a dream of many to come to Paris," said Farinelli as though speaking of something more general, as this enabled him to speak of it in more intimate a tone than if he were speaking tastelessly of personal matters. "If it becomes possible, one must realize dreams, mustn't one? It is the foundation of this art, to take a fantasy of mortal thought and give it flesh."

*William chuckled softly.*
"You sound more like a writer than a singer." *He smiled openly.*
"Though it is refreshing to find an artist that loves art for art's sake."
*He seemed unlike many of the performers that William had encountered so far. Delightfully so.*

Farinelli indeed loved art for art's sake, or perhaps to say that he loved art for Farinelli's sake was more honest. Nonetheless, it was his entire life, his justification for living, and to find someone so tender on the subject - rather than simply a businessman - made Farinelli gravitate very naturally towards the man.
Nonetheless, he could think of nothing else to say, Farinelli not being one to speak at great length. "I hope to meet you further in polite society, monsieur," he said very softly, eyes bright and very fond.
((I made Farinelli a page on the Marysuenica! Only it's short. But still!))

((Very nice!))
"Of course, of course." *William agreed, the ruffle of his cuff swaying as he offered a dismissive gesture.*
"You mustn't let me keep you." *His lips twisted in a mischievous grin. After all, he would no doubt meeting the man again, and likely at greater length. And that thought pleased him very much.*

Farinelli smiled back, not in an impudent fashion, but one that unconsciously reflected back Aubrey's own smile.
"I am sure I could very easily," he said softly, inclining his head by way of farewell, and, replacing his hat gently, continued almost gaily down the staircase.
