19th century Paris, hmm? She thought to herself, taking note of her surroundings. Well, why not? It might be fun. And, ah, an Opera House. It's been so long since I last sang.

"You seem sufficiently less confused than most," a voice commented out of nowhere.
Perched atop the banister of the grand staircase was a striped cat, grinning at her aloofly as its tail swished lazily.
"It's a shame, really. It's only to your detriment."

Her lips curled upwards slightly as she settled her gaze on the cat. "It's been a long time since I've been confused by anything," she replied. "I miss it, sometimes. Then I remember what it actually felt like, and I stop."

The cat's grin stretched wider and, as she watched, its body slowly disappeared from its tail upward.
"Well, sometimes you may not get a chance to miss having something, let alone stop," said the mouth, the only thing that remained. "Sometimes fate has to take a hand."

"Fate?" She laughed scornfully. "Do you give me your name? People do that so easily in these parts, but I didn't think you one of them. No; I suppose it's merely ego on your part to take that title. I believe I shall call you by it anyway. So, Fate, do your worst. This sounds much better than singing."

"Now, now. Don't presume to know so much about me. Why I'm such an enigma, I hardly know myself." The mouth sounded particularly proud of this fact. "If anything, I'm merely a messenger."
The mouth floated down the stairway banister, about level with where it should have been if the cat been walking along the railing.
"But, no, I wouldn't say I particularly have a name either. I prefer to...defy description, myself."

"My apologies, Fate." She inclined her head, only a twinge of mockery evident. "Your heart and your head are yours alone. I only observe your behavior, and guess at your intentions."
Her smile now was closer to a genuine one. "I must say, it is a pleasure to meet someone who understands the value of a name. I think we shall get along very well; that, or burn the city down in our feud. Or both, possibly."

"The value of a name, like the value of anything else, is all in what you attach to it." The cat's head, and only that, reformed around its floating mouth. It laughed.
"As you say, my head is mine alone. Because as long as I keep it unattached, there's no way for it to be severed.
"But why should we feud, little red?" It continued, shifting the subject with fluidity. "There's nothing so predictable as a feud. I should shudder to resign myself to such monotony."

"Precisely, my dear Fate. As long as I keep it unattached, there is no way for it to be severed. But, ah, I think we define that sentence in different ways. As to feuding - because it's fun, of course. What better reason is there?"

"Fun, hmm?"
The cat's eyes positively glimmered with a light that some might almost call...forboding.
"Is that a fact?"

"Merely an opinion. Feuding is one of my favourite games. Will you play with me, Fate? I bet you'd be good at it." She was almost purring.

The cat chortled.
"Well, I have been known to play a good round of cat and mouse from time to time." Its body reformed finally, paws tucked neatly under its chin. "I'd ask if you were certain you knew what you were getting into, but then, I already know the answer: you don't.
"But then, knowing things...where's the fun in that? It's so much better to guess."

"Oh, don't you worry about me, dear. I've a few tricks up my sleeves."
She bowed again.
"For now, though, I must bid you goodbye. There are preperations to be made." With that, she strode into the corridors of the Opera House.

"Oh, adieu, adieu...no worries, though. You'll most certainly see me again."
And with that, the cat faded away entirely, its toothy grin hanging in the air only a moment longer before disappearing along with the rest.
