Kristen stealthily crept into the restaurant and slid into the nearest booth. She felt she deserved a break--and an opportunity to satisfy her sweet tooth at that.

Ned tiptoed up to the girl, hands buried deep in his apron pockets. He seized a notepad from within one and unclipped the attached pen. "Um, good morning...there," he awkwardly addressed the young woman. "Would you like anything?"
When there came no response, Ned contemplated whether she had heard him at all, and he swerved on his feet, unsure as what to do next.

Kristen raised her head and grinned. "Good morning," she returned with a hint of timidity. She opened her mouth to speak but seemed to think better of it and fell silent.
After a few seconds had ticked by, she spoke, "Really, I don't mind. If you could get me anything..."

"Maybe you'd like lemon meringue pie or apple rhubarb pie--?" he asked, glancing down at the list of pies they had available at the moment.

"Really, anything'll do," Kristen grinned.

"All righty," Ned choked out, momentarily stunned by the young woman's smile. He was uncomfortable and unused to being around women as it was, and it certainly didn't help matters that this young woman was, well, ravishing. Beautiful. Gorgeous.
Ned silently turned to fetch the young woman one of the restaurant's more renowned pies. He felt a twinge of guilt recalling Chuck's own dazzling smile.

Kristen slightly stiffened, wondering whether she should execute the Heimlich Maneuver. As Ned shuffled away--standing taller than ever, she might add--she decided the waiter wasn't suffocating to death and assumed a more relaxed position in her seat.

Ned returned with a slice of sour cream apple walnut pie in hand.
"Here you are," he offered the young woman, gently sliding the plate before her.

Kristen turned up her face to Ned's. Well, damn, he was tall.
"Thank you very much," she stated cheerily. She stared at the piece of pie for several, drawn-out seconds before asking, "You wouldn't happen to have a fork...?"

Ned instantly reddened. God, it was just like him to have forgotten the one, necessary utensil in eating pie. One of these days...
"Oh, sorry," he hastily apologized, nearly tripping over himself in order to seize a fork from the main counter. He hurried back to the table. "Anything else you'd like?"

Kristen shook her head no.

Ned towered uneasily beside the booth, rocking to and fro on the balls of his feet. He lowered his gaze to the tiled floor of the restaurant and his glaringly red Converse sneakers. "Well...enjoy!" he exclaimed, a bit too loudly.
Face now flushed with embarrassment, Ned wheeled to shuffle off and cower in a dark, hidden corner of the restaurant's storage room. "Stupid," he chastised himself under his breath. "Stupid, stupid."

Kristen barely managed to stifle a laugh, and the hand that held her fork shook with the effort. "Thank you, again," she grinned.
