Treszka grinned. She liked when he let his guard down a bit--it showed that he was far more human than his stoic outer appearance would suggest.
"Good."

"You are outnumbered, dear brother." Violetta said, smiling.
"You'd have to expect such concerted attacks."

As Zachaire was shaking his head, dinner arrived on two serving carts, each in their own little covered dish. Things were quiet as the food was served, each left alone with their own thoughts.

Being served and waited on like this was a novelty to Treszka, who'd lived in a humble apartment most of her life before moving to a simple cottage off the beaten path. She'd always done everything herself, and so the situation was a new one to her (and nothing like being at a restaurant).

The covers on the dishes were swept away with a flourish, and the servants were gone as quickly as they'd arrived, leaving a nice and neat repast in their wake.
Violetta inhaled the aroma of the soup before starting in on it.
"So! Zachaire tells me you are a Wittelsbach--in a way, that makes you family, you know."

Zachaire froze for a moment, trying not to look stricken. Her name, when she'd given it, had sounded familiar, but he'd never questioned why. This would make things rather...difficult...if it turned out that Teszka was in fact a cousin.

Although it was fleeting, Treszka caught the look on Zachaire's face, but for a moment she was caught--technically she...wasn't...a Wittelsbach, it was simply the name she'd taken because of it's significance to her parents, yet on the other hand she could (sort of) claim to be one.
"Er...well...by marriage." She said at last. "It's rather complicated."
You have no idea just HOW complicated it is.

Unaware of the turmoil she'd caused with her question, Violetta paused in the middle of eating her soup.
"But I thought you were Rudolf's younger half-sister?" She said thoughtfully.

How the heck does she know all this? RUDOLF didn't know until I was ten!
"It's...sort of..." she said, reddening.
There was no way she'd be able to explain her unique situation without sounding insane.
"I'm adopted." She sighed, trying to sound tragic but also resigned.

"Oh! Forgive me for pressing on such a delicate subject." Violetta said sympathetically.

Zachaire was just glad that she wasn't actually a blood relation. There was enough of that going around among the aristocracy without there being any more.
"I don't think it was anything grave, Violetta."

"No, not at all." Treszka said quickly.
"I don't mind. I like to think myself as Wittelsbach even if I'm technically not one."
Better they think her adopted than crazy.

Violetta relaxed.
"Well, if you both insist it wasn't a social blunder, then I feel better." She said with good humor.

"I do insist."
Besides, thinking of the gnarled tree that made up their lineage was a rather headache-inducing exercise.

"So," she began, glad that that hurdle was passed.
"What do the de Chagnys do to occupy their time?"
