*Andrew went to the hotel in the early evening, having sent a note ahead, instructing Valerie to order them some supper. To all appearances, it would be a romantic evening in for the man and his lover.
He found Valerie with a book in her hand, of course, and soon thereafter their supper arrived.
While they ate, they talked of their activities, books, and sundry other topics of interest. Valerie's humour and unassuming charm eased Andrew's mind, and his manner became more open and relaxed. In the previous weeks, he had come to trust his friend more than anyone else in the world--even Tony had grown distant from him, now.*
"Shall we attend the opera tomorrow evening, do you think?" *he asked.* "We should make public appearances, and the opera is fine enough--I have taken a box for the season, so there would be no trouble as to acquiring seats."

"I should like that very much," *said Valerie, with a smile.* "At least, I believe I would. I have never seen an opera; but every fresh experience must be of some interest to me. How am I to dress?"

"The dark blue, I think--it will suit the purpose and the evening; and you look very well in it," *he said candidly, making her smile softly, though they both knew to some extent the mechanical motives of his wanting her to look delightfully feminine in public.*
