*Carolina had finished her chores before supper and managed to grab a bit of time where she was not needed at the house.
The springtime dusk cast a rosy glow over the trees, which were white and pink with blossom and deliciously scented. The grass grew long in the avenues between the trees, in this time of year when only a few gardeners stopped by now and again to check the trees for signs of blight.
The paths would be trampled nearly to bare dirt, come harvest-time, and so Carolina enjoyed the undisturbed peace of that bit of nature, the hem of her skirt damp from the wet blades swishing against her bare feet and ankles as she walked, sighing happily that the evenings and afternoons were then warm enough to permit leaving her shoes and stockings behind her at the base of one of the tree trunks.*

Though it was beautiful here, Laurent didn’t see any of it. He was stalking about the orchard, trying in vain to walk off the residual anger he felt. He’d just finished having yet another argument with his father, and as usual it had ended poorly.
It was ridiculous, really. Marc was long dead, and by rights the fortune that had gone to the brother he never knew should belong to Laurent. But no, it was Olivier, his nephew, that would receive the benefit.
As if Olivier would be left bereft without it…he could inherit his mother’s fortune, which was hardly a pittance in and of itself. Why did his cousin (he refused to call someone his own age “nephew”) have to get everything?
He did not see the girl that was also wandering the orchard until he almost ran into her.

*Carolina stumbled, startled out of her reverie as she nearly collided with a gentleman walking down the avenue in the opposite direction.*
"--e-excuse me, monsieur. I'm sorry."
*Bobbing a meek curtsey, she turned to flee, trying to recall where she'd left her shoes.*

The bump was just what he needed to distract him. At it was such a lovely distraction, too.
She also looked vaguely familiar to him.
"Pardon me, miss...but do I know you from somewhere?"

"I...I don't...I mean, I..."
I clean your fireplace every morning.
"You shouldn't."

Finally, recognition set in.
"Ah, yes. The fireplace girl."
He inclined his head by way of greeting.
"Forgive the run-in."
Fireplace girl, indeed--a very pretty one.

*Carolina assented with a nod, not blushing, but definitely pale, but said nothing else as she finally located her shoes and stockings, hastily pulling them on over her dirty bare feet.*

He wasn't quite done speaking to her yet.
"What was your name again, if you don't mind me asking?"

*Carolina's head shot up, her expression unchanged, though terror seemed to spark within her heart as her pulse jumped.*
"Veronique," *she replied.*

The name was unfamiliar to him, though that wasn't entirely unexpected. "Veronique. Thank you for humoring, madamoiselle." With a little bow and a roguish grin, he set off out into the orchard .

((Oh man, I was watching Vatel last night, which probably didn't help, but then I had SUCH a crackdream about Laurent/Caro/Olivier.))
*Carolina watched him go with a shiver. For one so ignorant, her more primal senses were still keen, though she knew not quite what the shudder meant, though she assumed it was most likely an instinctive terror.
Turning the other direction, she fairly fled back to the house.*

((Nuh-uh. I can barely remember it now, and all I do remember are the dirtiest bits, and so it all seems really dirty, now. There was a lot of sex involved with betrayal, loyalty, double-crossing and manipulation.))
