*That was precisely what he hadn't wanted to address. He stopped walking, but couldn't bring himself to look at Herbert. For six thousand years he had been watching humans live... and die. Now he would join them. He didn't answer; he couldn't get his voice to work properly.*

"All you did was buy us more time," Herbert whispered.

"But- we've got thirty- maybe forty years-"
*Barring sickness, or any of the million accidents waiting to happen every day-*

"How old do you think you are?" Herbert asked. "Rouding, I mean."

"Er- thirty-nine?" *He couldn't quite bring himself to say forty.*

"That's not rounding," said Herbert, shaking his head.

"Forty then," *he snapped.*

"I'm sorry-"
Herbert looked back at the empty stand.
"Do you suppose if I angered them enough on purpose, they'd make me human too?"
He just as suddenly frowned, shook his head and looked back at Aziraphale.
"No, that would give us even less time. Even if I lived for another fifty, sixty years, you'd have to bury me in ten."

*He sighed.* "What's done is done. Can we just go, please?"

"That's probably for the best," he admitted.

*He started out the door and back into the seemingly endless hallway. Something was off, though, and it was nagging at the back of his mind...*

Herbert wordlessly slid his arm and the cloak over Aziraphale's shoulders. His hand briefly bumped over the side of Aziraphale's throat, and Herbert's heightened senses suddenly felt a small, regular fluttering in the former angel's veins.
Blut! Ooh, blut!
He whirled his head to face Aziraphale, his smile looking stretched and desperate.

"Aziraphale looked a little worried.*
"What?"

"I could turn you!" Herbert exclaimed, his voice so tense and excited that he was nearly squeaking.

"Wha- No, Hebert, I couldn't-" *he was already in their bad books as it was- that would just worsen it.*
