*The angel sitting at the head of the room- where a mortal judge would sit, were this a real court, stood and addressed the one small, plump, worried looking angel and his vampire companion.*
"The Angel Aziraphale and Herbert von Krolock. You know why you have been brought here; for Judgement of the angel Aziraphale on charges of an affair with a creature of darkness."

"It was my fault," Herbert said quickly. "I tempted him-"

"Herbert, hush-"
"And he did not have the willpower to resist? Even one year, ten months and fifteen days later?" *it said, its tone smug.*

"We're in love," Herbert said coldly.

"Ah," *it said just as icily.* "I see. Is this true, Aziraphale?"
"Yes," *he replied in a voice that he meant to sound much more brave and defiant than it came out.*

"Not to mention everything I've done to myself to keep him," Herbert added.

*It scoffed.*
"Burn your pretty hands? Tie back your pretty hair? What great sacrifices you've made. You couldn't even bring yourself to cut it?"
*Not that it would have made a difference.*

Herbert sighed.
"Then cut it off, if that should please you!" he said irritably. "Do whatever you like, if it means we can stay together-"

"Your physical appearance if of little consequence, Vampire," *it said, silencing him with a voice edged with steel.*
"Please," *Aziraphale interjected, standing. He looked very small and very timid, there, in his human shape but there was a determination in his words and behind his eyes that spoke of flaming swords and huge, powerful wings.*
"I love him. That wasn't something that I was able to choose, and I certainly don't regret a moment of it. What he is hardly matters; you barely batted an eye when I was with Crowley-"
"Those were different circumstances. It was ineivtable in that case. The two of you were two sides of the same coin. It was only natural that you would come to love each other- as you still do."
*He winced a little.* "So you're telling me just because he's a vampire-"
"Not entirely. Love in this case, and lust are human emotions. We are above such matters. You have proven that you are not."

"I was taught as a child that God is love," Herbert objected. "Or at least I was, before my father started that whole denying-Him business."
"Denying Him?" the angel asked coldly.
Herbert straightened.
"Vati adopted Herr Nietzche's ideas," he said calmly. "That God is dead, and the world has no need for him anymore."
A flurry of whispers passed through the room.
"And yet I presume he was more than comfortable with the idea of Satan-" the angel began, but Herbert interrupted by saying "Only as something to swear by."
He raised his left hand with the middle two fingers bent onto his palm with his thumb crossed over them, and the smallest and index fingers pointing upward. Some of the angels actually gasped.
"Silly, useless, ceremonial hand gesture, better suited to musicians whose music is anything but," said Herbert, dropping the gesture. "I, of course, see that my father was wrong. For all of you to be here, I can only assume the tyrant Himself is alive and well, unless you're... filling in."
He lifted his chin in a somewhat challeging way.

*Aziraphale looked completely stunned and horrified. This was sacrilege and awful and- and not at all helping their case. If Aziraphale had been anyone else, he would have kicked Herbert under the table.*
"How dare you?" *the angel on the stand asked, its voice filled with righteous indignation.*

"I don't think He'd stand for this, not at all," Herbert continued. "Are we hurting anyone? No. I don't think I'm interfering with Zi- with Aziraphale's job at all. He persists in being so good that sometimes it makes my fangs hurt."

"And yet he continues to share a shop- a place to store his book collection (vanity, wastefulness)" *it counted off on its fingers as it spoke,* "with one who believes that our Lord is dead or a tyrant."
*Aziraphale cringed.*
"What does it matter whose company I keep if the job gets done?"

"And really- you'll probably find a way of calling this vanity, but really, there are far worse than me out there," Herbert added. "I'm harmless compared to most of my lot-"
He cringed a little as he realized that this was true. Herbert had always entertained notions that he was actually quite fearsome, regardless of what anyone told him.
"I don't like to kill, for one-"
