It occurred to Nicolas, grudgingly, and irrationally, that he deserved some greater recognition than that, and that Nicolas wasn't giving it, and, with a rather obvious sigh, as though being pushed into something, he reached into the pocket of his coat again to remove the rings, holding them in his hand and passing his thumb over them to glance at them and see if any of them he could possibly do without.
None of them seemed as though they'd fit this vampire's fingers, though, as he had chosen them for the little babyfaced monster that was Armand. One of them came to mind as being too much of a pastel for Armand - although he wasn't sure at all what colors Armand would or would not like - and he found he wasn't holding it, so he put those back into his pocket, pulled out another handful, picked it out - amethyst and diamonds, it was - put the rest back, and gracefully but practically took the hand of the mortal companion with one hand and put the ring on his finger with the other.
"It's for you," he said to the vampire, "but I'm giving it to him for you. It doesn't really suit you."

"You're too kind," Dorian said dryly, examining the ring.

This, of course, caused the boredom to disappear. Daniel was now rather amused.
He moved nearer to Dorian, to see the ring.
"Well, that's certainly a nice gesture."

Nicolas felt acutely self-conscious to have them both looking at it, putting his hands into his pockets and shrugging, but rather pleased all the same. "Sorry I haven't got one for you," he said. He was about to go on and describe Armand for them, and the thought of that gave him a real delight - Armand's slender fingers, so charming to picture, just as everything about Armand was, even those abstract traits of his which were not always very pleasant - but he declined to do so, finding it immediately distasteful. Why did he need to talk to everyone he met of Armand, anyway? He fancied it was some kind of deliberate rudeness to Armand, who'd hate it. He introduced himself instead. "Nicolas de Lenfent, by the way."

"Oh, that's fine. I don't wear anything like that."
And he didn't--ostentatious, for Daniel, was a wristwatch...and even that was something he didn't have at the moment.
Daniel didn't recognize the name.
"I'm Daniel."

(( Not to be contrary - what verse!Daniel remembers is his business - but just to be random, you know that in QotD Daniel thinks of a quotation from TVL and thinks it describes him perfectly, but Lestat had actually written it about Nicolas. I think that is rather delightful. ^_^ [and for the record it's 'one of those tiresome mortals who has seen spirits' or something.]))
Likewise, Nicolas didn't recognize the ambiguous Christian name "Daniel" outside of its theological significance, which he pondered briefly in wondering whether or not it was indicative of his experience with the Blood. Mostly, he let a good deal of pleasure in this moment steal into him, the nice simplicity and intimacy of sharing names, watching that lavender colored stone glint on the slender finger of the mortal companion. He wondered very suddenly, almost impudently, and with great bemusement, at the nature of the relationship between these two... what that little glittering ring would be witness to, perhaps, where the beautiful mortal man's hand might rest later, perhaps even in this evening.
Nicolas couldn't keep from smiling at them as though he'd known them at the Sorbonne, such was his delight in this little pleasant moment, of which he did seem to have so few.

((Er, it's not Daniel's memory, it's mine--I've read the first book about a billion times, QoTD several, TVL only a few and the rest only once, so a lot of the finer details in canon I've long forgotten <_<) )

**NEW DAY**
Josephine knew she couldn't simply hide at the circus forever, and that she definitely couldn't stay cooped up into trailer, only coming out for shows before disappearing back into her rooms after. Somehow drumming a massive amount of bravery, she'd made her way out of the circus and into Paris, having somewhat familiarized herself with the streets. Still, she asked directions, eventually finding her way to the oft-talked about opera house.
But of course, she had to stop by and perhaps catch a bit of rehearsal so she could hear what everyone was talking about.
