Sitting down, Midna listened, tolerantly. "Huh. You might be right. There must be quite a lot of predation around here...and I guess me, they just find scary." She sighed, then turned and glanced at him, raising an eyebrow at that, faintly. "Well, frankly, you don't exactly look like a loser to me."
That was unusually nice of her, and she wasn't sure really why. She might just as well have been angry with him.

"It's not about whether I LOOK like a loser," Tsume explained. "For wolves, everything gets harder if you're alone--and if you're alone there's usually something wrong with you, even if it's just that you're crazy enough to actually leave the pack. Therefore, lone wolves are losers."
He stretched and shifted around a little.
"At least Kiba's excuse was having his family die when he was a pup. Idiot tried to take me with him after Darcia pretty much killed me."

Midna didn't know that much about wolves in general, frankly, but she listened tolerantly, even showing a bit of sympathy, which surprised even herself--but then, she knew about being exiled and thinking of oneself as a loser.
She sighed a little and leaned back, clasping one knee. "What?" she replied incredulously. "He did? That's ridiculous, just because someone's wounded, you shouldn't kill them! Try giving them a chance to recover, or, for a thought, help!"

"What?! He never tried to kill me--oh." Tsume realized that she'd mistaken 'taking me with him' with 'taking me DOWN with him'. "No, Kiba literally tried to take me with him. Like, carrying me the rest of the way to Paradise."
He shifted uncomfortably at the rest of Midna's statement. "And you shouldn't diss mercy kills before you've had to give one yourself. What is it with human...-like things and trying to save every lost cause?"

Midna blinked; she tended to think in negative ways when not clear. "Ohh. I see...well, I don't know if it's a good idea to interfere..." Then again, it had always been her style to drag those around her into whatever plan she had going at the moment, so thinking about it made her a bit uncomfortable.
"I...kind of hope that I never have to actually do that," she replied quietly, sighing and fixing her hair. "I mean, well, I've...had to learn never to give up hope, and never abandon anybody. The hard way. But...I do know that not everything can be salvaged." Another deep sigh.

"Hnh." He scratched his neck a moment before answering. "Yeah, I've had to learn the value of teamwork, too. Toboe and Kiba were the emotional ones--always trying to keep everyone together or jumping into fights."
Tsume gave a whuff-ish noise and stretched. "Once Kiba gets the rest of his sanity back, I am NEVER going to be alpha again. A crazy wolf with someone to defend is even worse than normal insanity."

"It must have been hard to keep up," Midna replied, considering, and stared up into the perfect sky, a little too bright for her tastes. "I mean, with that kind of energy." Midna tried to consider what it must have been like putting up with her...huh.
"I don't blame you," she replied, snorting, and glancing in your direction. "I've got a lot of responsibilities to deal with myself...at times it seemed easier just to run away and never return, rather than face them all." Why was she being this confessional?

"Actually, Kiba had a tendency to run off on his own if the rest of us were tired," Tsume remarked. "There was this one time where he tried to cross a fricking DESERT, and he ended up in a bush that paralyzed him when he got too close."

Okay, that one surprised even Midna. "Oh, you've got to be kidding. I remember trying to cross a desert, and it was dangerous, but...that smacks of carelessness. No offense, of course."

"In all fairness, he was trying to save Cheza from the nobles," Tsume told her. "It was more like a few days' stretch of dirt than a real desert, anyway. And, you know, the paralyzing bush kind of caught him off-guard--none of us knew what it could do until some of the soldiers passed out in front of it."

"Ohh. I see," Midna replied, nodding. "That's rather understandable; it can really be infuriating how even nature itself keeps trying to thwart you when all you're trying to do is good."
She heaved a sigh. "But that does happen a lot doesn't it?"

"We were kind of used to nature thwarting us--it hadn't rained for generations, so you can guess how bad we had it already," Tsume remarked. "...Wait, how long do humans live? They kept mentioning "two centuries," so that's probably how long the planet went without rain. And how long wolves were into hiding."

Midna raised an eyebrow. That was bad. "Apparently, most die before they reach one hundred years," she answered, frowning a little, and saying nothing of her own age. She was 17, in the equivalent Twili sense. "That's awful. In hiding? Let me guess, over-hunted?"

"Yep. To both of them," he added. "That's why we started disguising ourselves; we're lucky most humans don't like touching."

"As humans," she replied, nodding in understanding. "Ahh...I see. I actually understand that. You have no idea how long the Twili have spent banished from the Light World."
