Isa switched her bag from her left to her right and walked in to John's shelter.
When his wife was alive they had been best friends, but it seemed since then he's life was all about the shelter, she barely saw him anymore.
So when he called to ask her about singing lessons for his daughter she agreed, then he proceeded to tell her it wasn't Marie. Of course that was a little confusing seeing as though the last time she saw him his wife had been killed and he only had Marie.
Then he told her about adopting Hazel and it made a little bit more sense.
"John?"

Hazel had been on the kitchen, washing the dishes. When she heard voices in the hallway, she came dancing through the room, her long dark hair dancing in thick braids, and her beautiful hazel eyes glittering with happiness. It wasn't much left of the miserable little child John had found only months ago. Her happy life with John and Marie had given the orphan the safe home she needed. With rosy cheeks she looked up at Isa with a smile.
"Can I help you with something, Miss?"
Her front teeth had finally been replaced by new ones, so she didn't lisp anymore. She felt relief for that.

Hazel smiled and took Isa's hand, and at the same time made a deep curtsey. Manners was something she had learned from Marie and John.
"Nice to meet you, Isa. I have heard Papa speaking about you. You used to sing at the opera?"

Isa giggled "I sang background for a couple shows, but I was never out in the front" she poked her stomach "apparently I was to chubby for an alto."

Hazel looked up at the woman. She didn't think Isa was chubby at all. In fact, she liked her. She was pretty, and she looked really nice, in Hazel's opinion.
"Then the managers had bad taste, Miss. I don't think you are chubby."
She replied seriously.

Isa chuckled "Well that's mighty kind of you" pulling on her bag she looked around "John, I mean your Papa isn't around is he?"
"Yea I am" said a voice from behind and Isa jumped.
Turning with a laugh she kicked John right in the shin "Don't scare me like that!"
"Sorry, oww" he rubbed his shin and smiled, taking Isa in to a tight hug "thanks for this."
"Ain't no problem at all John" she turned to Hazel "how would you like to see the opera?"

Hazel had looked at John and Isa with wide eyes when John made Isa jump and she kicked him in the shin in return. Her hazel eyes were glittering with suppressed laughter. She knew from the orphanage that one should never laugh at adults.
When Isa offered her to see the opera, her eyes widened, and she squealed with joy.
"The opera? Wow! Yes please!"
Her eyes shone with joy and she wrapped her arms around John and Isa and hugged them both.

Isa grinned "You don't mind do you John?"
"Of course not" John smiled and looked down at Hazel "all right love, go on and get on your nicest dress on and your cleanest pair of shoes okay?"
Isa nodded "Might be better than your clothes washin clothes."

Hazel looked up at Isa and John, her beautiful hazel eyes sparkling with joy.
"Oui, Papa."
She smiled and gave him a militant salut, before scampering off to her room. She quickly changed into her best dress, made sure her hair looked pretty, and checked that her cleanest pair of shoes were shining. Hazel had a strict upbringing at the orphanage, something that showed in her almost strictly correct manners, as if she was afraid of doing anything wrong.
Then she returned back to John and Isa.
"Can I go like this?"

Hazel beamed with joy, and pride over her beloved sister.
"Yes, she did! Marie is wonderful. Can she come with us to the opera too?"

John shook his head "It's just you and Isa today, Marie's got some homework she needs to do." He had decided it was better to homeschool Hazel than send her out with the other kids like Marie.

Hazel nodded. She knew that if Marie were going away on school, she would need to work hard to prepare. And that meant homework. Hazel herself was more than happy to stay at home with John. She had been homeless for so long. Now that she finally had a home and a loving family, she didn't want to just leave them again. But - she was also determined to work hard with whatever homework she was given. She wanted to show John her gratitude by becoming the best student she could be.
She wrapped her arms around John and hugged him, then she looked up at Isa with a smile.
"I am ready when you are."

"Oh yes ma'am" she smiled and lead Hazel out of the door.
