"But they do not live on the lake. I have to protect Erik and Julian."
He munched thoughtfully on his sandwich, gulped another mouthful of tea.
"and anyway, I do not mind drowning people. They would deserve it for trying to hurt my family."

"Hmm," Carlos said, seeing the logic in that (in a way) and absently taking another bite. "But does it follow that anyone in the lake means harm?"

"Oh, it would be too risky to let anyone go--they might show others, and then some would want to hurt Erik just because they think he is ugly--but he isn't."
He hopped up to take his cup to the counter and refill it with more tea before padding back, with a small cake in two as well.
"He is very beautiful, actually."

Carlos wouldn't go that far. And he also would not say that Erik's only fault was his ugliness. Indeed, there seemed to be a host of reasons to hate or mistrust the man. Two of them being "homicidal" and "maniac." That both might have been applied to his own lover--and by him--entirely escaped his notice.
"It's... very nice that he's got friends like you. To, er, help him out. How did you meet Erik?"

Of course, Mortimer thought Erik was none of those things, but probably would not much like Erik Destler.
"Oh, Erik was only a small child when I met him. In the carnivale. He would come to visit me in my tank and give me chocolate. It was before I was a person."

"Right," Carlos said, because none of that made any sense whatsoever. The little man was far to clever in his own way to be an idiot, but Carlos had met many kinds of people and wasn't ruling anything out. He could well be mad.
"You're old friends, then," he said. "Just how old are you, Mortimer?"

He nodded, smiling in a way that could project no malice, madness or lie.
"Oh yes. But I didn't see him for a long time after he left Henry's house, until Henry died and then I came here to find him. I stayed in the lake for a long long time because he was so tall and different...I only came out when Julian found me by accident."
He didn't answer the question of age, not knowing exactly how old he was.

Which must have been... very interesting, Carlos thought to himself.
"I see," he said. "And now you live with them. The three of you."
The sandwich was gone, and Carlos looked down, a little dismayed at the prospect of nothing else to eat, until he spied the cakes Mortimer had brought back.

The little man smiled and pushed one across to Carlos, gulping his tea.
"Yes, but sometimes I like to come Above and see people and the world. It is all very interesting, though Erik does not like it when I leave him for so long. He is building me a tank so that I can swim whenever I like but still be in the house. Oh--and it is where the torture chamber was before, so if anyone comes in that I do not like they can drown. Drowning is much better than hanging oneself, I think. Do you like them? They have loads of honey, just so." he beamed at the cakes.

"I'm not sure I can answer that," Carlos said. "I've never drowned or hanged myself. I hope not to have to make a decision like that."
He watched Mortimer for a moment.
"Are you related to Julian?" he asked finally. "There's a resemblance." In this shape, anyway. Not, of course, as a... a... fish-person. He took a cake and polished it off rather quickly.

He laughed musically and pushed his hand through his hair, leaning forward as he pushed his plate and empty teacup aside.
"I love Julian very much, as much as Erik almost. They're my family, I look like Julian because Erik thinks he is pretty."

"Right, right," Carlos said, not because he understood, but because he was realizing he never would. "So Erik thinks you're... pretty."

"I don't know." he shrugged, always suspecting that Erik only found him pretty in so much as a parent found a child so for the singular reason of their relationship.
"I think I must be a little pretty, people seem to like me. Shall we go to the river?"

Carlos chuckled.
"You're very pretty," he said, not feeling shy about that at all, "but what are we to do at the river?"

"Thank you." He smiled brightly and stood, grabbing Carlos' hand and pulling him up and along.
"We could swim, or you could watch me swim if you're afraid."
