Carlos was very confused by this point, but it was also very late, and too much had happened for him to be terribly particular at this point. It was easier, indeed, to say "thank you" and take the apple, though he took his with his fingers and raised it to his own mouth. He'd have to ask Erik.
"I think we ought to get out and change trains at the next station," he said apologetically. "I must return to the opera."

"Oh...alright, I suppose I must as well."
He agreed easily and sat up again to quickly finish off the food on the table and then spent the rest of the remaining trip--switch and back to the original station--snuggled up in Carlos' side napping.

He didn't have the hear to move him.
This was bad enough, he thought, when it involved being a cat and submitting to a curious boy's exploration. But this? El Castro, with a strange, uncanny, not-quite-mannish person sleeping gently next to him on a train? He may as well have been bitten by a were-puppy. Or pillow. It was absurd.
But Mortimer wasn't like other people, and even Carlos could see that. Even if he didn't understand it. The train stopped, and he reluctantly nudged Mortimer awake.
"We're here. Shall I get us a cab?"

The little man sat up sleepily and blinked himself awake with a huge yawn.
"You may take a cab, monsieur, I quite like to walk."
He was smiling as they exited the train and stretched out his back in a graceful arch before padding off the platform.
"You need to get home sooner for more sleep--you have rehearsals tomorrow. I shall like to hear you sing again," he beamed.

Carlos looked at his pocket-watch, noting the severe lack of time he had. Though Mortimer's words made him smile. At no time in his life was he immune to praise.
"And so you shall," he said. "Though Mortimer, I'm certain I needn't tell you this, but... no one is to know about what I can do. Er, the cat, that is."
He looked down at the little man seriously, his brow slightly furrowed as if in response to the urgency of the matter.

Mortimer simply continued to smile, gave a little chuckle and leaned up to kiss the tenor's cheek.
"I will keep it all a secret just for me, okay. Goodnight, monsieur!"
And he hopped off the platform and jogged bare footed along the cobbles toward the river again and was gone.

As Carlos hailed a cab he was acutely, uncomfortably aware that the little man had utterly charmed him. It was outside all sense, for Mortimer was strange and should, by all rights, be somewhat off-putting. But Carlos found himself chuckling as he made his way back to the Opera. He would sleep well tonight, if not enough.
