Éowyn smiled and sat down next to Esmeralda and the goat. She smiled.*
"It is I who should be thanking you. I don't know anyone here, and I hate to eat alone. What a nice goat you have! What is his name?"

"Djali," she said softly. "He's my only friend." She looked up at the older women. "Why are you being so nice to me?"

Éowyn smiled and petted Djali gently.
"He is a fine goat." She smiled warmly. "I have a horse. Her name is Windfola."
She wondered how Windfola was now, without her. She hoped someone would take care of the horse. She smiled to Esmeralda again.
"Perhaps I enjoy your company, rather than being alone." she smiled.

"They didn't let you take your horse?" Esmaralda said, rather foolishly. She blushed. "No, of course not. Perhaps I should have left Djali there. He would have missed me, but he would survive."

Éowyn smiled warmly.
"Well, we could say that if I had been on my horse that day, these people would never have managed to capture me. Also if I had been smart enough to bring my sword when I went to the market. But I wasn't, and here I am."
*She looked over at Djali, smiling softly.*
"I am glad you brought him. Pets are good company. I wish I had Windfola here, but I am afraid they might have noticed if I tried to smuggle her into the dining room..."

Esmeralda laughed, then covered her mouth as if the sound surprised her.
"Yes, Djali is small. I suppose that's why no one's taken him. I do hope nothing bad happens to him."

Éowyn laughed too, glad she had made Esmeralda laugh.
"If anyone tries to touch him, I'll try to protect him. It is important to have a pet in a place like this. It allows you to keep your sanity. If not for your own sake, then for the pet."

*While Anastasia started on her own plate of food, she kept an eye on Sorelli--the woman's state of mind was starting to worry her.*
"I hope there is a change soon...I don't think some of us will last long." She said quietly, glancing at Sorelli.
If Sorelli heard, she ignored it.

**MUCH LATER** *Johanna by now looked more glamorous than usual (though she never smiled anymore), and was dressed in what was to the court the exotic fashions of Europe (though Johanna thought her clothes merely made her look like a courtesan.) The problem, of course, was that she wasn't being made-up to see the king. She had told them of her marriage, and they had listened. She wasn't told what she was being prepared for now, only that the name Sao Feng had been mentioned. But who he was or what purpouse he served, she had no idea.*

Sorelli, too, was in the same situation--once they'd learned that she was a mother already, they made it quite obvious that she wasn't what they were looking for. So she sat with the others that were bound for this Sao Feng. Vaguely, in the back of her mind, she recalled something her father had once said about Singapore, but she was by now too far-gone to really care anymore.*

Anastasia, much to her embarassment, was also wearing something along similar lines. She, however, was not going anywhere--unmarried and without children, she was stuck in this place until Xerxes started calling upon the girls that were being kept. She shuddered to think what that would mean .

*Slowly, she realized that the golden-haired girl had moved. She held onto the offered hand, needing something to keep her in reality. Part of her knew that if she let herself drift too far, she could become lost.*

*Éowyn was frowning. She had never been touched by a man, and now she was stuck in the palace with the girls who should stay with Xerxes. She looked down at her clothes, wondering what Uncle Théoden and her brother Eomer had said if they could see her now. Or Faramir. She could imagine Faramir's face in front of her. She missed him so badly. She wondered if he had noticed she was gone.*

*Suddenly, there was a flurry of activity, and eunuchs began to move quickly about, some herding the girls for Xerxes as far to the side as possible.
The girls that had been rejected were shuffled nearer to the door, where there now stood the usual eunuch guards plus several decidedly unsavory looking men armed with swords and pistols.
One of them leered at the at the gathered girls*
"This is them?"
The nearest eunuch nodded. The pirate turned to one of his companions, rapidly said something to him in Mandarin, and turned his attention back to the assembled girls.
"You are wondering what your fates are. I am here to take you to it: you are all now property of the Pirate Lord Sao Feng, slaves to be carried upon his ship to the colony of Australia."
His grin turned downright lewd.
"The men there are lonely."
