*Once finally wrapped in the safety of her room with its warm fire, she leaned against a wall and looked up. What in God's name had possessed her? Why had she done something so absolutely... stupid?*
*Finally she had one of her first intelligent thoughts of the day and changed out of her wet things, stripping down completely and still feeling soaked to the bone. She changed into a dry nightgown and underthings and wrapped herself in a shawl, sitting by the fire and staring into as if it would give her advice.*

**NEW DAY**
*Johanna didn't sleep that night. All the thoughts she hadn't had when she was fleeing had hit her: that he would awaken, that someone would find him, that she'd be made to marry him, that (and this one somehow made her heart twist into the worst knot) Robbie would be jailed for assault. When there was a knock at the door in the morning, she didn't bother trying to keep her parents and the policeman with them out.*
*They were here to look into the beating of Gustave du Pont, who had been found in the early morning, near-frozen, and was now at home resting, and being treated for his injuries. Unable to voice the truth for fear of the shadows it would cast upon herself and her family (and of course Robbie), she was vague in her answers. Infuriatingly so, until finally the inspector asked her directly if she'd seen the attacker.*
"I did not see him." *She lied.* "I ran for fear I would be hurt myself.*
"And you didn't think to tell your parents?"
*She colored.* "I suppose I was in shock." *She said softly.* "I didn't know what to do."
*The policemen had dealt with young society misses being assaulted before. They never thought straight in crisis, and he was only glad this one hadn't fainted--a move that would have ensured her injury. Her shock at the time was understandable--they only hoped they could find the man who'd so grievously injured a member of the elite.*
