"But you're the king," she said, sounding genuinely dismayed. She couldn't imagine what being king was for, if not for this.

"As king I am bound to an ancient protocol...to uphold the standard set by my ancestors..." *he did not quite stumble over the words, though they clearly made him uncomfortable.*
((Protocol stops sounding like a real word after watching that movie...))

Esmeralda's dark brows furrowed, her eyes flashing a bit with spirit she'd not shown since the dance earlier.
"The standards of kidnapping woman and girls?" she demanded. "How many do you need?"

"There is more to it, much more," *said Xerxes tightly, sensing that she would put him on the defensive unless he regained control of the situation.* "It is never so simple as a man and a woman--it cannot be that simple. Certainly I do not expect you to concern yourself with the complexity of the law and ritual that governs us both, in its ways. Perhaps I was a fool to expect anything at all."
*He reached for a fine silk wrap, drawing it about his smoothly muscled arms and torso.*
"You are finished here. Return to the women's quarters," *he said, more to the waiting eunuch escorts outside the door than to her as he left, stalking off to the library.*

"Wait," she cried, because she was curious, and no longer afraid of him, but the eunuchs barred her path. She didn't know what she was doing here, or why, but she knew she may have just given up an opportunity for... something.

Getting into the royal pants, that's what.
*Xerxes' steps slowed for the barest of moments before he steeled himself and kept walking, disappearing in the direction of the library.*

Her arm fell, and she was shoved by the much-larger escorts back towards the harm quarters. Suddenly cold, she wrapped her arms around her bare torso, wondering why she'd been called to begin with, and what had happened.
And why she hadn't thought to just ask for something. Was captivity so bad, if you had everything you wished?
Yes, her mind answered. Freedom was everything.
