"Paris? In the land to the north? To the west?" *Xerxes shook his head.* "That is the land of the Barbarians."

"Oh. Is it?" Esmeralda said, native pride somehow having taken root despite her background. After all, she had lived in France all her life. "Well at least they don't make women dress like... like this." She gestured to her ample-yet-willowy form, barely concealed. "And they don't go around kidnapping people while they're dancing."

"In all fairness, I believe the northern climes require rather more clothing... And as to the method of your arrival..."
*He frowned at his sculptures.*
"I did not know."

Esmeralda crossed her arms.
"How do girls usually get here?"

"They're Persian...for a start."
*Xerxes pulled a long silk wrapper with costly embroidery around his arms.*
"...beyond that, I am not certain. I have only recently become king, you see, and have not yet had time to spend on dalliances in the harem. Evidently some of my advisors went too far in their zeal in that respect."

"Oh," Esmeralda said, something nudging the edge of her conscience about their country having little to do with their deserving of slavery, but it was his country after all, not hers. She parsed the rest of his words.
"Does that mean... it was a mistake?" She looked up hopefully, holding her breath.

"I wish..."
*Xerxes fell into silence for a while before he continued speaking.*
"My lady, all that I may offer you as king is yours--I cannot express my disappointment at how you have been treated and the path that has led you here. The royal treasury, servants, anything I may give you will be yours."

Esmeralda blinked. When that failed to clear things up, and she was still standing there with an attractive king-person offering something that seemed impossible, she blinked again. To the same effect.
"Bring me the head of John the Baptist."
"Pardon me," she said at last, her mouth feeling dry. "I'm not sure I heard you right."

*snerk*
"Anything in my power to give you is yours, as you wish it," *said Xerxes quietly.*

A tiny frown line appeared between her brows.
"Why would you do such a thing?" she asked, wonderingly. "You have many girls, surely..."
She could not be that special. He had never even laid eyes on her before. Was it possible he was not such a monster? He did not look like one, in truth.

"You need not question me. Merely consider what..." *he waved a hand in the air.* "You wish."

Esmeralda bit her lip, managing to look very appealing.
"If it isn't to much trouble, sir," she said hesitantly, "I should like to go home."

*Something darkened in Xerxes' eyes, and there came a flash of something like pity or regret to his expression.*
"You are home," *he said softly.*

Esmeralda started, taking a half-step back involuntarily.
"Paris is my home," insisted rather stupidly. "I mean no offense, sir. My lord. But you asked..."

"It is not within my power to give you such liberty as you desire," *said Xerxes.* "Even to secure your...most precious happiness...to let you go is not something I can do."
