At the growl, the most incredible wave of good-will came from the kitten, cloying and sweet, a sudden flare-up of calm like someone had flicked an emotional switch. It was abruptly under him, snuffling again, its nose to the ground as it wound in and out of Carlos' paws.

That had not been his intention at all. But suddenly it didn't matter and he was left blinking down at her, and he was thinking how he must be careful of his paws, since she was so little and helpless and...
He shook his head. But it didn't help. It was like that realization that Simon smelled like Destler. He nosed down and nuzzled the kitten, something suspiciously like a purr beginning to rumble in his chest.

The kitteh rubbed her cheek against Carlos', as he'd lowered his face to her level and it was now available for rubbing. An answering purr, low and occasionally hitching in the kitteh's throat, started up. If the kitteh was capable of anything resembling human thought- and who was the say she wasn't?- the thoughts running through her little head would be something along the lines of that's MUCH better.
As it was, she was radiating smugness and fluffy glee.

Carlos's eyes narrowed, knowing he was being manipulated, but not entirely sure how or how to stop it. It was quite annoying, in the midst of the superimposed grateful pleasure. He nuzzled the kitten roughly--though not too roughly--and wondered where it belonged.

The kitteh staggered back a little, then turned around smartly and began to trot off. A few feet away she stopped, turned around, and stared at at Carlos, bottle-brush tail whipping from side to side playfully.

Carlos tilted his head slightly, and after a moment, followed slowly, his stride so much longer than the kitten's. He had nothing better to do, and since he felt no inclination to eat it, he thought he might as well.

The kitteh trotted along in front of him, apparently content. There was the skitter of rat's feet in the darkness as they passed a lump of debris and misc. abandoned items, and the kitteh veered off like a shot after it.

Hearing the same thing, Carlos darted after her, though he slowed his steps when he realized he was gaining too quickly, suddenly quite content to allow this to be a lesson for the little thing. In truth, they'd probably been cats for about the same amount of time, but Carlos had been alive longer, and felt older, and perhaps his experience with Simon was working on him in ways he had not imagined.

The kitteh was running the mad, slap-dash sprint of kittens, all legs and pounding paws. If she noticed Carlos deliberately pacing himself, she only ran harder, skidding around a corner in pursuit of the rat that they could both smell and hear, if not see in occasional glimpses. More skittering; they'd run into a little group of them, and rodents scattered madly in all directions.

As there were more than one, Carlos thought it appropriate to go after one of his own. Perhaps the kitten would learn something.
Not that he'd been at this very long, but the lynx had come with some extra instincts that he was learning to make use of, rather than let rule him.
Crouching gracefully, the stub of his tail twitching once, he launched himself silently after a big, juicy one, the cat taking over entirely for Carlos' own sensibilities would only get in the way.

The kitteh was having no luck with rats nearly as big as she was. She skidded to a stop to watch Carlos pounce, ears flattened against her head. She felt distinctly annoyed when he caught it.

But he did not kill it--at least, not right away. Instead, he dropped the squeaking thing in front of the kitten and stepped hard in its tail, so that it jerked this way and that but could get no further than the scaly appendage allowed.

The kitteh hesitated, giving the trapped rat a half-hearted swipe, but she seemed suddenly more interested in Carlos. Her head cocked to the side abruptly, the usual kitten expression of having just been smacked unexpectedly in the face with a mackerel now focused on Carlos.
"Squeak?" she said.

Stupid kitten, Carlos the lynx thought. Doesn't know a good thing when she sees one. He stared down at her, the rat struggling ridiculously and grating on Carlos the man's sensibilities. He looked pointedly down at the rat, then back to the kitten.

If the kitteh had been human, an eyebrow would have been just as pointedly raised. As it was, she was fortunately not. The kitteh pounced with no more direction from Carlos, claws sinking in as the thing squealed and snapped.
