Shadi began to stir vigorously, launching a great deal of flour onto her robe. It was sort of lumpy, so she kept at it, until it sort of looked... goopy. Experimentally, she lifted a finger to her lips, to taste it.
"Needs flour," she said with odd decision, and added it. "And a little milk."

*Rochester now had 5 pans of different sizes on the floor and looked up at her.*
"Milk? I never would have thought of that."
*He hurried back to the ice box, retrieving the jar for her.*

Shadi took the milk and added some, throwing in dashes of other things, tasting it, and doing it again. She stirred as if possessed.
"Got a pan, yet?" she asked. "I think I'm done."

"Um, well...yes." *Rochester answered decisively, pulling up a pan and setting it on the stove.*
"Ready when you are." *Even though he hadn't thought to light it.*

Shadi beamed at him and dropped a spoonful of batter in, becoming confused when nothing happened.
"Oh," she said. "I think it needs to warm up."
She lit the burner, leaving the batter in.

((I feel kinda bad that their mutual ineptitude makes me giggle so.))
"Oh!" *Rochester exclaimed in delight.* "True. That does seem better." *He watched it closely, waiting for it to start looking more familiar.*

They watched.
"I think something's wrong," Shadi said. She sniffed. "I think there's burning."
((I'm actually trying to set up that when it comes to tasting things, Shadi has some skill to differentiate flavor and put the right stuff in. So the batter is actually pretty good. I wanted her to be good at something she didn't expect, and that was reasonable from her background. She'll eat anything, but that doesn't mean she can't discriminate.))

((Works for me. It doesn't make my enjoyment any less. )) *Rochester looked at the pan. It didn't look like a pancake. There were little holes in it and smoke was starting to rise. He touched the top with his finger tip, squeaking in pain and sucking on the wounded digit.* "Well, it certainly is hot. But it hardly looks like a pancake." *He studied where the batter had been removed by his meddling.* "It's still raw."

Shadi stared at him in disbelief.
"Smoking things are hot, Rochester," she explained kindly. "But is your finger okay?"
She removed the pan, giving it up for lost.
"I think you have to turn it over or something. Do you have a... a turning over thing?"

"Turning over thing..." *Rochester's brow lowered, thinking he knew what she meant. He'd just seen something like that...His eyes lit up, running to the sink where the spatula had been hanging to dry. He retrieved it with exuberant urgency.*
"Like this?" *He offered.*

"Yes!" Shadi said, proud and happy. She prodded the burnt, uncooked pancake with it. The pancake crunched.
"Er... It's stuck," she said. "Maybe we have to make the pan unsticky."

*Rochester looked befuddled.*
"And how are we to do that? With some sort of...oil?"

Shadi considered this carefully.
"Oil's slippery," she agreed. "Perhaps, yes. Do you have some?"

*Rochester quickly pushed away the thought of the small bottle on the bedside table upstairs and set to throwing open cupboards until he successfully retrieved some.*
"Here, darling." *He watched her in utter fascination. He did his best to force back any though that involved the word 'wife', but it kept crawling back into his brain. With positive inflection, nonetheless.*

Oblivious to anything matrimonial in Rochester's brain, Shadi turned her full attention to the task at hand.
The batter burned and stuck when one poured it into the pan without oil. Or was it without being hot? She took another pan and poured the oil in, then the batter.
It mixed together a bit and sat there. Frowning, she didn't wait for it to get hot, but retrieved another of the pans sitting on the floor. This time, she left the oil in until it sizzled, and remembered something about watching people fry things. She poured another spoonful of batter in, smiling as it sizzled happily.
