"Certainly not--it's a very uncertain world out there," *said Anne, thinking for a moment, that she sounded rather like Marilla and not wholly certain she enjoyed the comparisons being drawn in her own imagination.*

For her part, Georgiana merely nodded solemnly.
"I just wish I knew some way of helping him," she said. "He so wants to take care of me, and I know he will. I have no worry for myself. But he's taken it rather hard, Miss Shirley. I'm certain he blames himself somehow."

*Anne poured Georgiana a cup of tea and patted her hand.*
"I'm certain your brother will see things come right...and he is not the type of man to allow despair. His pride will certainly help him to rise above this."

"All his pride does is help him not say a work to anyone! Forgive me, Miss Shirley, but it's true. Fitzwilliam is not prone to despair, he is far too sensible for that. And I am certain he would never be unduly prideful. I merely... I cannot imagine what will become of him."

"He...he will rise above this, of course," *said Anne, but her conviction had faltered. Miss Darcy knew her brother better than Anne had any right to...she likely knew things about her brother that Anne did not; though Anne knew things about Darcy that Georgiana did not...
She blushed lightly.*
"He must..."

Georgiana smiled shyly, as if unused to the expression.
"Oh, he shall," he said, her sisterly devotion still intact. "He's my brother. I'm sorry to speak so plainly, Miss Shirley. I didn't have anyone to speak to."

"I am happy you consider me a friend enough to confide in," *said Anne, smiling gently.* "I know what it is to have no one to speak to..." *she added, thinking briefly of Katie Maurice.*

"I've never had a friend like you, Miss Shirley," Georgiana said, most likely unaware of how sad that was.

"Then I'm flattered--and please, call me Anne..." *she said warmly.* "Now that Diana's married, I confess I was rather lonely here, until you came."

Georgiana's face lit up with a more certain smile.
"But you have all these fascinating people about!" she said. "I love Pemberley, but it does get lonely. I know I'm too shy to really take advantage of society, but... I've often wondered what it would have been like to have a sister."
She flushed, not having meant to imply any such relation between them.
"But... Anne... I came here not only to see you, but to ask if you might be able to help. Fitzwilliam has such a high opinion of you, I cannot help but think you could cheer him up."

*Anne blushed a little, but managed to keep her tone light and conversational.*
"Of course I'm flattered you think so highly of me...but what might I do for him? I confess I'm rather at a lost to think of ideas..."
*She hummed for a moment, her brow furrowing.*
"--Alice Penhallow's having a clambake next week at her father's farm. Would you and your brother like to come? It's not much...rambles on the beach and a hayride and the clambake and a little dancing, most likely...we'll not have so much fine weather left in the year for it, and I'll introduce you to everyone!"

Georgiana clasped her hands before her in an attitude reminiscent of prayer, though far more cheerful.
"Oh, would you?" she breathed. "I've never been too a... clambake. But Anne, I'm worried Fitzwilliam won't go if I just tell him I want to. Won't you invite him yourself? He listens to you."

*Anne smiled, though her insides trembled a bit.*
"...I'll ask him, then, if you like...if you're sure..."

"Oh, yes," Georgiana said, unaware of any such complexity of emotion on Anne's part. "Why, are you not friends?"

"Well, I suppose we are--it is only that your brother has a level of reserve one usually does not come across often..."
