*Will looked about for a moment, but finally conceded.*
"I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take a look."
*He took the one that she offered, leafing through it.*

*María was reading through her letters of the day. The people of Paris had obviously discovered there was a Duchess living in their midst. She was peltered with letters from people asking her for money, for advise or both.
Unfortunately there were also other letters. Threatening ones. María read through them with furrowed eyebrows.*
"Will, I have got a letter, obviously from an Englishman here in Paris. He is calling me a "tart". What does that mean?"
*She asked innocently.*

*Will look up, confused.*
"That he doesn't know you personally..." *He muttered.*
"It's a disrespectful term. It means...a woman that is lose with her sexuality. Like a whore." *He returned to his paper. What could he do about it?*

*María looked over the letter once more, arching her eyebrows. She started reading the letter out loud.*
"We don't need a tart like you in our peaceful little town. You should be burned at the stake for housing the spirits of the devil. Don't you think we know that you are a witch and that your soul is lost to the devil. Beware witch, your time will come!"
*She smiled and looked over at Will again.*
"Charming, isn't it? It isn't even signed."

"Cowards never do." *Will muttered, glancing to her.*
"There's nothing you can do to change a mind like that. Best to not let it under your skin."
*He shook his head.* "Don't know what he expects of you anyways."

*María shook her head.*
"I don't understand. Why would anyone even write letters like this?"
*She gave him the letter. It was written on cheap paper, and with red ink. The letters were somehow jittery, as if written by an unsteady hand.*
"Do you get anything out of this? I don't know what he expects of me either."

((Aw, is Erik writing drunken hate mail? Nah, he signs his stuff.))
*Will took the letter, studying it for a moment and shrugging.*
"Eh, people are always unhappy about something. They can focus less on it when they shove it on someone else."
*He offered it back.*

((XD I love the idea, though. It would be fun.))
*María took the letter and looked at it.*
"What do you think I should do with it? Go to the authorities?"

((But why on earth would Erik be sending her mail, much less threatening mail?))
*Will shook his head.*
"What would they do about it? It isn't signed...hell, there isn't even any direct threat."

((That's a good question. She only goes to the opera as a part of the audience.))
*María nodded.*
"Well, you're right about that. As long as we don't know who has written this, there's not much we can do."
*She continued going through the rest of her mail. The rest of the letters were bills, or from people that asked her for financial support.*
"Well, the rest of the threats I think I can manage. They are from people who tries to threaten me into giving them money."

*Will shook his head and turned the page.*
"Someday people might learn to be nicer in asking for things. It does have a habit of working better."

*María chuckled with laughter.*
"Yes, I have noticed that as well. I tend to help sympathetic people rather than bullies, even if the Church says that we all are creations of God."

*Will shrugged.*
"Suppose it can't be helped. What a piece of work is man..." *He muttered, scanning the new page.*

*María nodded. Her father had said the same.*
"Is there anything interesting in the newspaper today?"
*She asked as she continued going through her letters.*

*Will scrunched up his face distastefully.*
"Not really." *He closed it and offered it back to her.*
"Though it is hard for me to find connection to the living."
