((Not exactly an in-between, but there is one, and it's not the foyer ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) )) *There was a ball. A ball where everyone had been asked to wear masks... and Nicki was the only Enjolras there. Nobody knew, of course, but still. Barely anybody he knew and all sorts of girls and women clamoring at him. Which was obnoxious, really, as none of them had a thought in their heads.* *He was in his best eveningwear, with a blue waistcoat and black trousers and tails, as well as a simple black domino that, as his sister (who was working tonight) had informed him was 'quite dashing'.* *So he danced, the most sought-after partner in the room.*

Iris was also having a less than perfect time. Meg had assured her that a ball would be a fantastic way to meet new people and get a taste of the city. So, despite Iris’ protests that she wanted nothing to do with balls or social events of any kind; she had been washed, dressed in one of Meg’s outfits, and forced into the whirl of masks and color. She just felt so out of place, standing off into a corner.
‘At least it is a masked ball,’ she thought as she adjusted the white domino over her face. No one would have to see her plainness and have their evening ruined.

*Nicki somehow managed to sneak away from the whorl and wind up in the corner, looking more than a little ridiculous. He was pressed against a column, forehead in one hand, the other pressed against the marble, out of sight of the dancers... attempting to hide.*

“The blonde girl is looking for you, you know. I would stay behind there for a few more minutes at least,” Iris said to the boy.
“No, wait. No it’s safe, she’s found another partner.”

*He blinked at Iris, not having noticed her there in his attempt to block out the entire scene.*
"... good evening to you as well." *He said, nodding.* "And thank you. Was it the one with the dyed hair or the one who was overcorseted? Because if it was the overcorseted then I may yet be in danger--the one with dyed hair seemed quite tenacious." *That last part with a hint of humor in his dark-blue eyes.*
"Forgive me, I am Nicolas d'Enjolras, Vicomte d'Enjolras." *He bowed, his dark, boyish curls flopping a little as he did so.*

“Good evening. I am no one of utter importance. Good night.”
Iris turned away in order to hurry and find a corner that was not so occupied with handsome boys.
“And it was the corseted one who found another partner.”

"No, wait!" *He called, and with his long legs he caught up to her easily.* "I have told you who I am; it is only fair you do me the same honor."

"Believe me, good sir. It would not be a honor to know my name."

*He rested a hand on her arm--only really the fingertips against a smooth sleeve--to stay her.*
"Would you at least dance?"

Oh, he was persistent. Iris was tempted to remove her mask in order to scare him away.
“Why would you want to dance with me?”

"Do I require a reason to seek your company now? Shall I submit an application?"
*His eyes sparkled teasingly.*
"Or is it that you're off to meet a lover in a corner? Is that it?"

Iris bristled.
“I was unaware that one needed permission to accost and insult young ladies. But I am not properly adapted to the ways of this city, so that is to be expected.”
She let out an angry sigh before continuing.
“If I told you my name, sir, would you leave me to my own devices?”

"And have I insulted you?" *He asked, genuinely curious. And when he got that way, he tended to stop listening to anything he didn't specifically wish to hear.*

“If you won’t even listen to what I say, I see no reason why you need to know who I am.”
She turned again, but called over her shoulder.
“If you cannot tell at this point, yes. You have insulted me.”

"Wait!" *He called again, again catching up.*
"At least let me apologize."
