"Here we are..." Meg said gently as she lead Iris into the currently unoccupied dressing room shared by the ballet chorus.

Iris staggered like a newborn colt.
There was so much to see in this building.
"What is this place?"

"It's the Opera Garnier," said Meg. "Unless you mean just this room. This is where the other girls and I put on our makeup and wigs before the show."

"Opera Garnier?"
Iris felt even more foolish than before.
"I thought it might have been a church."

"Monsieur Hugo said it's a bit like a church of profanity," Meg replied. "Now sit, you, and let's try to do something about that hair."

It was then that Iris realized that she and the dancer had not been properly introduced. Or improperly introduced, for that matter. It would be a sad day in the world when possible concussions and sudden blood loss impeded on good manners.
“My name is Iris.”

"Marguerite Giry. My friends call me Meg, though, and you're the third friend I've made in a week!"

Iris smiled at the word. Friend - it was a warm word.

"I've lived here all my life," Meg said as she leaned forward and began combing out a tiny section of Iris's hair. "In this very building, actually. Though I'm going to go live with my mother and stepfather soon."

Iris’ blood involuntarily ran cold at the word ‘stepfather.’
She hastily changed the subject.

((Okay!))
“I don’t have any money, but I need a place to stay. Just someplace to rest my head while I adjust to the surroundings. Not for free, of course, I’m used to working for a living.”
She was rambling.
"Do you know where I could trade labor for board?"

"Here, probably," said Meg. "If you're willing to help clean the place. But this building is dreadfully big, and all the cleaning ladies I see around here always look so tired..."

"Trust me, there are far worse things in this world than being tired," Iris said as she turned around to face Meg.
"Do you know who I should talk to about this?"
