*Still in her ballgown, Rebecca sat in a heap of crumpled silk beside the twins' cots, watching them sleep. She tugged off her gloves and removed the jewels she wore at her neck, ears and upon her hair, carefully cupping them in one hand.
She kissed her babies upon their foreheads, fighting back tears.*
"...oh my darlings...what kind of life have I brought you to?" *she whispered, her heart breaking for them.*

*One of the maids, who had been tasked to watch over the children when their parents were away, entered the room but stopped in her tracks at the sight of Rebecca*
"Oh...my lady...I'm so sorry..."
*She turned to leave, not wanting to intrude*

"No, no--I--" *Becca tried to compose herself as she got to her feet.*
"It is only...only that I--I must go. Tonight. At once. Please, have a carriage ordered for myself and the children...not one of the family carriages--a hired hansom cab will do. I will pack my things...and please, speak of this to no-one."
*She went back to her rooms to change into a dress suitable for traveling and packed a small bag with her belongings and some money for the journey before returning to pack the children's things in another bag. She dressed the twins, and woke Stefan, who dressed himself.
She left a sealed note and a candle burning in the empty nursery, with Rudolf's name upon it.*
My dear--my dearest--
I do not know how I must bear what I am doing to you; I can only trust that it is for the best. I can no longer ignore the very great shame which such a marriage as ours must put upon your position and your family. I will always recall your very great kindness to me and my children. You are truly the best friend in the world to me. Whatever truth we may know in our hearts, the world will never understand us, and I know not how to make them see.
Good-bye, my love.

*When Rudolf returned from the matters of state that had drawn him away (annoying, that--he'd rather be with Rebecca and the children)--he was confronted with a maid that was by turns frantic and hysterical. It took several moments of trying to calm her down before he realized that she was in a panic that she'd lose her job because she'd let Rebecca disappear.* "What do you mean, she disappeared?" He demanded. *Cowed by the look in the Emperor's eye, she swiftly handed him the note. When he read it, he went pale.* No...I can't lose--"Send for a search party. She can't be out of the country yet, if that is what she aims for. Look especially at inns--" *He was talking to his head of security now, who was looking rather skittish. Rudolf was a rather mild person, and seeing him working with such an intensity was off-putting* "Sir...surely...to expend all that manpower for a woman and children--" *Rudolf pinned him to the spot with an icy glare* "Am I the Emperor?" "Yes." "I command it. Now." "Yes, sir." *He'd never really used his power, not beyond what was necessary. He'd never felt the need to...until what was more important than anything threatened to slip away *
