*Duchess María smiled warmly and looked at him.*
"How many persons are staying here? Just so I know how much food, medicines and clothes to send. And you will probably need shoes as well, yes?"

"Milady, it changes everyday, some days we have 10 people here, other days it's 100. Those are the days I wish this place was bigger, we only have so many rooms, so many beds, that sometimes the people must sleep on the floors and on the couches. One night-" he laughed "-one night we had to remove the tables from the dining room so that people could have a place to sleep."
He looked down "As I said, anything will do" John sighed "and I will not take this without payment toward you. I will send that letter tonight and I will contact you when they have returned my letter. I will help you fight this milady."

*María gasped when she heard of the idea of stoving 100 persons into a room. But there had to be solutions. She remembered the houses in the neighborhood. Some of them had been empty. There might be solutions there. She lifted her eyes to face John again.*
"Monsieur John, it seems that some of the neighbor houses are empty. How about I bought those buildings and helped you furniture them, to get a bigger shelter? That way, you could room many more people? And I could still help you out with food, clothes and medicines."
*At the age of 18, María already knew how to administer large households and villages.*

He stared at her "Milady, it is just little Marie and I, how would we take care of so many places?"

*María smiled and looked back at him.*
"Ah, Monsíeur. That would be no trouble. You see, I have always paid my staff well. And I treat them well. Because of this, there are many workers from all around France that comes to ask me for work. I take in as many as I can... but it only takes so many persons to run a castle and the villages. So I have more workers than I need. If I take care of their salary, could you help me to give them work?"

He smiled "I-I just don't think I can accept all that, the clothes and medicine will do just fine" he patted her hand again, this time suddenly getting images of a familiar man, but in ghost form, and a longed toothed woman.
He said nothing.
"Shall I call you a carriage?"

*Maria had been haunted for so long that she knew that this peaceful conversation with John would have to end soon. And she didn't want to bring him into trouble. She stood, and walked toward the door.*
"I- I think that would be for the best. And thank you. For everything, Monsieur. Not at least for giving my life a new meaning. I will enjoy being the patron of this place, if you will allow me. We can arrange it so that no matter what happens to me, your shelter will not suffer financially."

"Please do not put yourself through such troubles for me" he walked over to his phone and called for a cab "it will be here in a few minutes."

*María smiled.*
"It will be no troubles, Monsieur. I am only glad I can help. It is terrible that all these poor people have to live such lives. You do a great job taking care of them all, monsieur."
*She gave him her hand as a goodbye.*
"Thank you for existing, Monsieur. Without men like you, this world would have been a lot darker. You bring hope into the darkness."

He held her hand and kissed it softly and opened the door, the carriage all ready being there "When they say a few minutes, they really mean it" he smiled and lead her to the carriage helping her up in to it.

*María smiled warmly and gave him her business card, signed with her personal autograph. It contained her adress on the castle, and also the adress to an office she was running here in Paris.*
"Thank you, Monsieur. This is my card, so you know where to get hold of me. I will start sending the things I promised to the shelter, starting tomorrow."
*She got inside the wagon, and leaned out the window.*
"If you need anything.... please let me know."

John waved as the carriage took off "Of course milady!"

*María smiled as she sat in her wagon. She decided that she would not mention this shelter to Astaroth. She didn't want to cause the kind gentleman there any trouble.*

He waved her off and went inside of the shelter.
What strange happenings Paris has once again brought me.
He looked around his shelter and sighed, he knew he should have said yes, yes, yes to all that the woman had offered him, but his pride, as everyman understands, wouldn't let him. He believed he should work for what has been given to him.
And I shall, I will send that letter in the morning and help that poor young woman be rid of those spirits.
