*Emily had come in early, dispatched some lawmen with an official summons for M. Khan and spent the rest of her time preparing the room and straightening things up. Perhaps she'd watched too much Law & Order, but she'd dug a chic black leather jacket out of her closet and paired it with some dark slacks and some smart little boots that were stylishly ass-kicking but with a low enough heel to maintain professionalism. She'd washed her short dark hair, but there wasn't much else to be done with it, so it curled slightly at the ends and otherwise made for a messy-ish but respectable bob.*

*Genghis stood proudly awaiting the investigator. He had been surprised by the summons, but he wanted to get to the bottom of this, and if that required a bit of patience, he would just have to put in the effort. He stared at the office that stood stoically by the door. He wasn't sure of what purpose he served, but perhaps these things were procedure. He looked regal, even if he was just waiting.*

*Emily entered the room, shutting the door behind her, her eyes fastened on the case file as she did so. A moment later, she looked up at Genghis.*
"Monsieur Khan," *she said, by way of a greeting, wondering if she ought to shake a suspect's hand.* "I'm sorry if you've been kept waiting long. My superior will be with us shortly."

*Genghis looked a bit surprised to see a woman here. In trousers. He turned to the table, his hand on the chair, though he did not sit.*
"I will wait as long as I need to."
*His grip tightened on the chair's back. His head felt funny. Her voice was so...familiar. She was infecting him, being brought out in every woman he met. It was better not to look. Not to find her staring back at him. She was dead. He had to accept it and move on.*
"I do not wish to take up your valuable time. I am fine waiting alone."

"I just have a few questions we need to get cleared up as regards our investigation into your...ex-daughter-in-law's death."
*She glanced at her notepad.*
"When was the last time you saw the..."
*Strangely, she found no name for the victim. Her married name had been Khan, and so she had been able to track down the daughter and ex-husband, but still.*
"...the deceased? Before she died, I mean?"

*Genghis's other hand joined the first on the chair. So like her. It stabbed deep in him and his mind faltered a bit, trying to remember.*
You mean when she was still a girl or...after?
"It had been some time." *He managed quietly.* "She was...going through some tough times. She didn't want me to be involved."
With her.

*She made some notes.*
"...would you say your relationship with the deceased was...troubled, then?"

"It was...complicated." *Genghis pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to focus.*
"She was a strong woman. I'd...I'd never met anyone like her."
*He could almost see her in his mind's eye, her indignant glare, her determined stance. The way she glowed wrapped in fur rugs... He shoved the thought away.*
"I think that there was much about me she would have like to see change."
That did change.

"Did you ever experience any animosity between the two of you?"

*Genghis paused. That was a strange way of putting it.*
"We...did not always agree. But I like to think there was a mutual respect."
On some level.

"Were these...disagreements--did they ever escalate into any kind of violence or physical manifestation of anger?"

"We spared on occasion, but that was..."
*Genghis frowned at the implication.*
"It was never like that. I respected her."
*He turned back to face her, chin lifted in proud indignation. And...it was worse. He hated being right. She was so very like her. Her hair was short but the likeness... He felt his knees buckle.*
"Emily?" *He whispered, as if she might vanish at the sound of her name.*

"Please, Monsieur Khan, let's try to stick to the facts," *she said, still making notes.*
"Did you or did you not have a hand in her death?" *she asked blankly.*

"No." *Genghis shook his head slowly, but he couldn't take his eyes off her.*
"You...you're alive." *There was unabashed wonder in his voice.*

"Useful, though hardly a pertinent fact, Monsieur. If we could continue--"
"Your son, one Nadir Khan--how would you describe your ex-daughter-in-law's relationship with him?"
