*Death gave a low chuckle, lifting his hands defensively.*
"Oh, that's not my purview. That's up to the Higher Powers. I do the taking, I guess, but normally it's due to something that you fleshy ones have contrived. Always getting yourselves into sticky situations. I'm just here for when you find one you can't get out of."

*Guido chuckled with laughter, still a bit nervous, and looked around the room. It was now empty, and he knew that whoever it was he had been sent here to arrest, had gotten away by now. And here he was, sitting in a brothel in Paris, having a conversation with Death. He arced his eyebrow with a smile.*
"Like now, you mean?"

"Yeah. Pretty much."
*Death looked a little awkward for a moment, like he wasn't sure what else to say.*

*Guido sighed and looked around. This situation was awkward for him as well.*
"I wonder what my wife Paola will say when she hears I ended up in a brothel."

"Well, uh..."
*Death rocked slightly, shifting his weight.*
"We could just move things along."

*Guido smiled.*
"I think that would be for the best. No matter what you have planned for me, it can't be worse than facing Paola's wrath when she finds out that I have been in a brothel."

"Yeah..." *Death answered knowingly.*
"Wives can be like that." *He thought of Demiselle. Her golden hair, her sweet smile...and all the time he spent on the couch.*
"All right then."
*He reached out and touched the man's forehead. There was a cold breeze, but that was about it.*
"See?" *He smiled gently.*

"You didn't get away either, did you? Ah, women...."
*Guido sighed, then looked back at Death with a glimpse of surprise on his face.*
"Is it over already? I didn't feel a thing!"

"No, that was the easy part, loosening the soul."
*Without another moment, a horse fell through the ceiling, crushing what had once been the good-natured officer. Death just sighed.*
"Now it's over."
*Two girls peeked over the ledge into the hole that had previously been their floor. One elbowed the other with a frown.*
"I told you it was a bad idea."

*The horse through the ceiling had come so fast that Brunetti never saw what was awaiting him. When he was crushed, his last thought was:*
Well, at least I wasn't killed by a hooker. Paola would never let me hear the end of that....

"All right, this way."
*Death took Guido's spirit firmly by the wrist and together they disappeared in the same pillar of blackness.*
((Give me a sec and I'll post elsewhere.))
