*Merlin came over to Gawain and sat down beside him. He stroke the boys head gently and tried to explain.*
"You see, Gawain. The tortoise is a tiny creature. Just like you. But since it doesn't have a mother and a grandfather to protect it, it carries its house on its back. When it gets frightened, it hides in this house, to feel safe from the dangers outside. It's a bit like when your mother brought you to this fortress to keep you safe from the dangers of the world."

*Gawain seemed oblivious to the words and started to force his tiny hands in the holes of the shell.*

((Awwww, I love that kid! *melts*))
*Merlin laughed and removed Gawain's tiny hands from the holes of the shell.*
"No, Gawain, not like that. It will frighten him even more. This is how to get him out again."
*He held some lettuce against one of the holes in the shell. Slowly the tortoise stuck its head out again, starting to eat the lettuce.*

*Gawain took the opportunity to grab clumsily at the tortoises head, but was not fast enough to grab it before it withdrew again.*

*Merlin laughed and looked down at the boy.*
"You seem to enjoy your studies of the nature, lad. When you grow older, we can have some really interesting lectures."
*He offered Gawain some lettuce.*
"Now see if you can get him out again, just like I did."

*Merlin chuckled with laughter and looked at him.*
"You can eat as much lettuce that you like, Gawain. That is actually good for you. It will make you strong."

*Gawain gummed it for a while then opened his mouth and let it fall out, covered in drool.*

*Merlin chuckled with laughter.*
"What's the matter, lad? Didn't taste so good anymore?"
*He picked up the lettuce and threw it in the dustbin, before whispering to Gawain.*
"I understand, laddie. I can't stand lettuce."

*Merlin knew that the shell of the tortoise was too hard to be broken, so he allowed Gawain to continue his studies. He knew this was a way for children to learn about the world. He sat down on a chair, studying the child with interest.*

"Now, Gawain? Do you enjoy the taste?"

*Gawain sucked a while longer, then paused, smacking his lips before throwing the tortoise hard to the floor, causing it to skid several feet.*

*Merlin raised an eyebrow and looked at Gawain in surprise.*
"I should probably get angry with you for throwing the poor tortoise like that, but that was an incredibly good throw. In the future, you would have done very well in the baseball league."
