She didn't expect him to react favorably to her presence in his home. She hadn't exactly appreciated him in her domain, but...
This was different.
She set the bottle of wine on the table and sat down to wait.

*Erik stalked into his home, grateful that no one was about. It would be hellish to have to listen to that baby cry, when all he wanted was to wallow in the pain and despair of losing, once and finally, Christine. This required solitude and a great deal of elegant sulking.
So it was with some degree of anger that he noticed the woman at his dining room table.*
"Who invited you?" *he demanded.*

"We've shared a common loss, I think."

*His eyes narrowed. He figured she didn't mean Megan, or Pina. But he was reluctant to believe they'd both known and loved Christine.*
"I'm certain you're mistaken," *he said coldly.* "What makes you think you will find sympathy here?"

"Where else are either of us going to find it?"
She slumped forward in desolation.
"Though you at least had the advantage of being a man."
She glanced up at him for a brief moment and added, "And beautiful."

"Erik is afraid he is all out of sympathy, at the moment. Unless it is for himself."
*But he preened a bit at her last words. He was, rather, wasn't he? Not that she was anything like what he'd been.*
"Well. It seems to matter little, in the end."

"Why do I remember her kissing me and holding me when I thought I was dying?"

*Erik blinked at her. How was he supposed to know?*
"I expect you're delusional," *he said helpfully.* "Most people, living down here alone, would go crazy. Not Erik, of course; but you might be more unstable than he."

She angrily pulled off her mask and flung it on the table.
"As though the fact that I'm a woman wasn't enough, I had to look like this?"

*Erik looked calculatingly at her.*
"I don't see the difficulty," *he said breezily.* "True, you are Oriental."

"What?"
She sounded genuinely confused.
((What hump?))

*Erik sighed. He was supposed to be brooding! Or destroying his home! This was completely outside the parameters he'd set for appropriate behavior.*
"You. Aren't deformed. You're Japanese," *he spelled out.* "Certainly a handicap in its own right, but hardly a reason to fancy yourself banished from all society. Especially in, you know, Asia."

"I was born here! You've seen my brother- my twin brother! And what do you call this?"
She gestured at her right cheek.

"He was a sight uglier than you," *Erik pointed out.* "You might as well have a birthmark. You were never rented out as 'The Living Corpse,' Erik would warrant. And we've been over this before, but you cannot possibly have been born here as the opera house was not even built yet. And I helped build it! I don't know what that makes you, but it is certainly making Erik very frustrated!"
*He pointed at the wine.*
"Is that yours?"
