Megan was bobbing Proserpina up and down.
"Come on, baby girl, help mommy and stop crying..."

*Julian had slunk in unnoticed, as he was prone to do. He sat and watched the woman and child, vaguely amused. Casually he strolled over to her and moved to pull the blanket back.*
"She is an interesting child..."
*He smirked down at the bundle.*
"So like my mother..."
And yet he can obviously throw a better pot than you, mademoiselle.

"Your moth- Oh."
She pulled her daughter back toward her and said condescendingly, "Julian, Erik is a man. Men don't have babies. Even if you did come out of him, you are not a baby. You're a..."
She paused, thinking of the right word.
"You," she said finally, "are probably a terratoma that acquired human form. It's happened. Never like this, I admit, but- Why am I bothering to explain this to you? It's not as though I owe you an explanation. I don't like you, Julian. You frighten me."

*Julian was surprised by her candor. He blinked and looked at her inquisitively.*
"You are a woman of infinite contradiction then, Megan. For I am born of man, there is no denying it, whatever I might be. You have said that you love Erik, and that he must love Pina as your child, but you find me so unpleasant? Why can you not open your heart to one like myself? Is it my face?"
*He studied it in a newly installed mirror.*
"If I were ugly, like her...like Erik...would you love me then?"

"It's not your face," she said primly. "I find your face quite pleasing. It's just... there's something rather horrifyingly unnatural about you just appearing as you did, and- Forgive me."

*Julian arched his brow.*
"But Erik...he is not...unnatural? His mannerisms are not unpleasant?"

"I don't know why, but he never seemed unfamiliar to me. I feel like I've known him since I was very young."
Realizing she was on the brink of speaking to him respectfully, she pulled back and added, "And as far as I know, he didn't come sloshing out of another man fully grown."

*Julian looked wounded.*
"You would reject me for an aspect of myself that I cannot change? I did not choose the manner of my birth. There is nothing I can do to alter it. Am I to be denied love for that reason alone?"

Megan's shoulders drooped.
"Do you love me? Is that why you want me to love you? I can learn-"

*Julian looked almost hopeful but nervously so.*
"I...I don't know what it is to be loved...how can I know if I love you?"

Megan paused, trying to think of how to explain this.
"When you see me," she ventured, "do you feel a kind of warmth inside you, a feeling that says if something happened to me you would be upset?"

*Julian's eyes searched hers questioningly.*
"Is that what that is? Love? Is that what it feels like?"

"It's hard to explain, really..."

*Julian looked hopelessly disappointed and turned away.*
"Then perhaps I will never know what it is to be loved..."

"When you feel it, you'll know. It's a wonderful feeling most of the time, though it can hurt too."
