Richard smiled devilishly.
"Ah, but may not a wife need wooing? Surely, as thou knowest me, you can believe that much."
Another footman approached, urgency in his bearing, and Richard leaned away to hear his news. His face darkened. Terms? The lily-livered vermin spoke of terms?
"It seems, my lady," he said, turning back to Beatrice, "that wooing is the least of that which separates myself and the queen. My ruse, for such it was to claim your attention, must be exposed."
He turned to the man, his face black enough of mien to quail the most stalwart heart. "Tell the rabble that the King and Queen of France do not speak of terms with the likes of them; that they have merely ensured their own executions by this caper, and invited the full might of the King's army to be brought against their quailing mob, should they refuse to return the Queen unharmed. Well GO."
He lunged slightly towards the man, hastening his departure.

*Beatrice was still reeling. Richard...was the King of France. It just wasn't...wasn't...right? Proper? Something was wrong about it for certain. And she did what she could to avoid the thought that it was because he was married. Why should that bother her? It meant that she was free of him. He was another's worry. If she was so happy to find this, why did her belly wriggle so? She rocked in the start of a pace, looking from floor to Richard. To king.*
"Your...Majesty. Perhaps it best I take your leave, for in truth it would seem that you have far pressing matters with which I might offer no solace or aid."
Not that I would. Of course...

"You may take for me that which you will," he said gravely. "Though I pray this development does not herald your departure from the palace entire."

*Beatrice looked at him for a moment in disbelief.*
"Your Majesty...I will stay and serve as I have promised to. But..." *Her lips tightened briefly.*
"I should stay out of your path while such troubles burden you. I will see to your linens until then..." *Her brow lowered, trying not to think on the situation too much. Work gave her focus and for that she was grateful.*

It was true, he had not the time for this nonsense now, though he wished to dally longer. Still, his position here had been gained at least partially through Marie, and while he might hold it without her, it would be harder.
"Then mayhap I will seek you out, when my burdens have lifted," he said in a tone not at all befitting a married man. A man married to someone else, that is.

"Mayhaps, your Majesty." *Beatrice answered, not enamored of his tone, concerned by it in fact, but she could not banter so rudely, him of station so much higher than hers currently. She lifted her basket onto her hip.*
"Mayhaps I should away, leaving you to more pressing matters."

"Yes, yes," Richard gestured with his good hand. "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, and laundry must needs go on."
He bowed, just to put Beatrice on edge, and stumped off to attempt to save his kingdom.

*Beatrice hurried away, confused to say the very least. It was just...so much. Too much to process at the moment. Worked helped, giving her a much-needed distraction.*
