*The surprisingly lovely young man bowing to her threw her off, and for a moment she wasn't quite sure how to respond. But...perhaps this one, along with everything else, was part of the lovely change in their fortunes?
She smiled at him, wishing she automatically knew his name rather than having to guess at it*
"It is a pleasure to see you, my good man."
*In the back of her mind, she was already planning how to start levying taxes...*

*Man? Was it possible Her Majesty did not recognize her?*
"It's Oscar, your highness. Oscar de Jarjayes. The captain of your guard? I hope you have not secured another for the position."
*It was a point of pride with her, but there seemed to be some confusion around the palace, and Oscar was not certain what role her absence had played in that.*

*Strangely, the name did resonate in Marie's mind. Though she couldn't dredge up any memory of Oscar, it nonetheless felt as though she ought to remember*
"Oh...forgive me, Oscar. There's been so much on my mind of late, thanks to how out of control Paris has become."
*She gave a reassuring smile*
"But rest-assured, your position is secure."

"Of course, Madame, it is your right to retain or dismiss me as it pleases you," *Oscar said politely.* "Is there anything I can do to ease your mine, your highness?"

*Marie wasn't quite certain what Oscar's role was. She'd have to guess*
"Well...I've acquired some enemies as of late, and I fear they may be plotting something. Perhaps...you could be my eyes and ears?"

*Oscar glanced at the man. Her king. Her mind was fuzzy on this point, as if something was wrong but she couldn't quite place why.*
"I am yours to command, your highness," *Oscar said, but her even tone hid some anxiety. Both over the thought of Antoinette in danger and Oscar being relegated to a spy.
Then again, who else would Oscar trust for such a job?*
"Know you anything about those who plot against you?" *she asked.*

*She shook her head regretfully*
"Nothing specific, aside from some fellow nobles."
Old families that have opposed me in the past.
*She did not know how much Oscar did or did not know, and felt it best to err on the safe side and not reveal too much.*

*Oscar nodded. She well understood court politics. Or rather, understood their dangers, if not the actual motivations that powered them.*
"Of course, Your Highness. I shall be ever vigilant on that score."
*She noted, absently, that King Richard had disappeared.*

"Thank you. I am glad to have at least one trusted name aside from my husband."
*It wasn't until then that she realized what Oscar had noticed*
"Richard?"
*She hadn't even seen him leave...*

((Don't know why I did that. Hmm.))
*Once again, Oscar was struck by the oddity of Richard's existence, his presence in her life. In Antoinette's. But it wasn't the kind of thing she consciously realized was wrong. It just... itched. The knowledge was there, inserted as it was. But the sense of him wasn't. Still, Oscar put it down to some ignoble feeling, unworthy of her. Jealousy, perhaps? Perhaps she just did not like the man.*
"Your majesty? Is something wrong?"

*She cast a worried look about the room, before turning her attention back to Oscar*
"He was just here, and it is like he vanished."
Perhaps it is the oddness of this world...
*She hoped that it was simply him leaving swiftly enough for her not to notice*
"In any case, I am glad to see you again, and to know you are here."
*She was glad--for some reason, seeing Oscar gave her an enormous sense of relief.*

*Oscar's smile was small, but her relief was immense. She never showed such things, however.*
"Indeed, your highness. I myself am very glad to be here. I will do my utmost to see that whatever trouble is brewing among the nobles is kept at bay."

*She gave Oscar a genuinely bright smile*
"I have the utmost confidence in you."
Even though I don't know where it's coming from.

*Oscar could not hide her own smile entirely. She lived for nothing more. She would do anything for her queen.*
"My lady is too kind. But your confidence will not be unfounded. Is there anything else your highness wishes of me, or should I begin my investigations?"
